?The Rogue Valley Pear Industry,? presented by Sue Naumes, is the topic for this month?s Windows in Time program on October 6, from 12 noon ? 1 p.m., at the Medford Branch Library, 205 South Central Avenue, and repeated on October 13, from 12 noon ? 1 p.m., at the Ashland Branch Library, 410 Siskiyou Boulevard. This free event is cosponsored each month by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services.
Prior to the introduction of vineyards, pear orchards once formed the basis of the largest agricultural industry in the valley. While fruit trees were being planted by the earliest settlers to the region, it wasn?t until the 1930s when pears surpassed all other fruit trees. By the 1970s, the Rogue Valley was the largest pear growing region in the Pacific Northwest. Pears are still the largest agricultural commodity in the valley. Ms. Naumes? talk will highlight the evolution of the industry with personal insight from her family?s experience as one of the valley?s long-time orchard families.
