Lecture 1: From Spartan Victory to the Coming of Alexander
The period from the end of the Peloponnesian War in 404 BC to the beginnings of the conquests of Alexander in the mid-330s BC is filled with surprising events. This lecture will focus on the continuing infighting between city-states, the surprising military defeat of Sparta, and the unexpected rise to ultimate power of the Macedonian king, Phillip II, and then his son Alexander, first over the Greeks, and finally over the world.

Lecture 2: Alexander?s Conquest and the Foundation of the Hellenistic World
Alexander is one of the most remarkable figures in world military and political history. Alexander?s empire existed for little more than a decade, but its influence over the Middle East and West Asia lingered for centuries.
This lecture will concentrate first on Alexander?s conquests and his unexpected death and then turn to describe the complex Hellenistic world that arose from the efforts of his successors to hold and extend their power.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Medford Library. Please call the Medford Branch Library at 541-774-6415 for additional information.cell phone application
