Apple is suing rival Nokia over patent infringement in the U.K., as part of a larger battle between the two companies over smartphone technology.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company, which filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, is extending its ongoing legal action against Nokia from the U.S.
"This is an unsurprising development, which seems designed to put pressure on the ongoing dialogue between both companies," said Mark Durrant, a Nokia spokesman. "It changes nothing in the fundamentals of the matter, which are rooted in Apple's refusal to respect Nokia's intellectual property and attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia's innovation."
The legal battle between the two handset makers began when Nokia sued Apple last October, alleging that the iPhone maker infringed on its existing patents for basic mobile functions such as sending email and downloading applications.
Nokia then demanded royalties on all iPhone sales since the device's launch in 2007.
Since then, several charges and countercharges have been filed between the two companies, including complaints at the U.S. International Trade Commission that may result in a ban on imports of either Nokia or Apple products. While such an outcome is unlikely, an ITC decision, which is scheduled next year, usually leads to a quick settlement agreement.
Separately, Apple is embroiled in a legal dispute with HTC, maker of Android smartphones, which many analysts see as a proxy fight with Google.
