Rapper reveals how he spent his cash from crap games in episode premiering Saturday.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Nelly has a few gold records tucked under his belt, but the MC's obsession with the shiny stuff goes back to when he was a teen with a penchant for a quick gamble.
On the latest episode of "When I Was 17," the St. Louis spitter recalls his dice-throwing skills and reveals what he bought with some of his big winnings.
"I was the best dice shooter I knew," Nelly grins in the episode, which also features Karina Smirnoff and Joanna Garcia. The rapper's homeboy Lashondo agrees: "He had more good luck than he had bad luck."
And the soon-to-be-superstar tried to milk that luck as much as possible, taking every opportunity to get in on a game.
"We used to shoot dice in the band room, in the bathroom. If there was a crap game, I was getting out of class to attend that crap game," he says. "This is how I got money for the new J's [Jordans] that was coming out; this is how I got my lunch money. This is how I ate."
Flinging the dice proved to be a lucrative hobby for Nelly, and the "Grillz" rapper knew exactly what he wanted to do with his newfound green.
"I remember the first time I won a large amount — I won, like, 120 bucks," he says. "I took a buddy of mine with me and I said, 'Yo, we gonna go down here, and I'm about to get this gold tooth.' "
The dental bling was far from mom-approved, so Nelly tried to ease his mother, Rhonda, into the idea of gold caps with some practice jewelry.
"I had been putting these fake gold tooth caps up in my mouth, just trying to see how my mom would react," he says. "I came in the first time, and she was like, 'Boy, what you got in your mouth?' I said, 'No, look, it's fake.' "
Mom didn't really care if the caps were fake and ordered Nelly to let the look go.
"I really couldn't tell if it was real or not," she says. "I told him, 'Do not put any more of that mess in your mouth.' "
Despite the parental warning, Nelly stuck to his original plans to trick out his grill.
"I won that 120 bucks and I was like, 'I'm gonna get a real one now,' " he says. "So I went and I got a real one."
"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Joanna Garcia, Karina Smirnoff and Nelly — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

Making PCIe-Based SSD Solutions More Powerful & Flexible
Today, Dell announced that it along with other founding members EMC, Fujitsu, IBM and Intel have formed the Solid State Drive (SSD) Form Factor Working Group. I know some will say, ?why yet another standards group?? The simple answer is that today, PCIe-based SSD solutions provide performance, but lack ease of use features customers have come to expect and appreciate. By standardizing the form factor and interface, customers stand to gain easy to use, scalable PCIe SSD solutions with lower integration costs. In order to get there, this new working group is dedicating itself to advancing PCIe SSD technology standards in three technology areas: A connector specification which will promote interoperability of several storage protocols, supporting SAS/SATA 3.0 as well as PCIe 3.0. This allows greater user choice and flexibility. A form factor which builds upon the current 2.5-inch standard to enable enclosure flexibility while supporting the new connector definition and expanding the power envelope in support of higher performance. The support for hot plug capability to create high-availability and serviceability benefits. Together, the working group will focus on enterprise customers who are pushing the storage IO envelope and require high performance, easy to use, cost effective, storage solutions to optimize CPU performance. Imagine a new standard that can incorporate serial-attached SCSI, serial-ATA and PCIe all on the same drive chassis so that system manufacturers and users would not have to change their architecture to accommodate the new hardware. Harman in 'ginger rodent' attack
Harriet Harman said Lib Dems were 'political mutants' Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman has launched a withering attack on the Liberal Democrats at her party's Scottish conference. Speaking to delegates in Oban, she branded Chief Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander a "ginger rodent". She also said the Lib Dems in Scotland had become "political mutants" after joining a coalition with Conservatives. Ms Harman urged delegates to ensure Labour claimed victory at next May's Holyrood election. She said many people who voted Lib Dem in May "believed that they were a progressive anti-Tory party". Ms Harman said they "woke up to see Nick Clegg with David Cameron in the rose garden of Number 10". She said that there was "incredulity" at seeing Mr Alexander, an MP from the north of Scotland, becoming "the front-man for the Tory cuts". "Now, many of us in the Labour Party are conservationists - and we all love the red squirrel," Ms Harman said. "But there is one ginger rodent which we never want to see again in the Highlands - Danny Alexander." She said every Lib Dem MP and MSP had mutated into "something alien to Scotland - Tories". Ms Harman insisted Labour had learned the lessons of their general election defeat. She said the Scottish Parliament election will send a signal to the UK government - it is the beginning of the end. Taking Waves: FCC Green Lights Unlicensed Use of Wireless "White Space" Frequencies [Slide Show]
Consumer electronics companies got an early Christmas present this year when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to grant unlicensed smart phones, computers and other wireless devices approval to connect to the Internet via vacant "white space" airwaves. Exactly which Christmas, however, is less clear--consumer electronics–makers wanting to take advantage of broadcast spectrum space abandoned as a result of last year's shift to digital television have much work ahead of them to meet the requirements laid out by the FCC. Not Neutrality?: U.S. Weighs Options for Turbo-Boosting Nation's Broadband into the 21st Century
The Internet has ushered in an era of largely unfettered access to a wide variety of information. Yet, although so much of what the Internet has to offer is gratis, access to the Internet itself has never been free. This dichotomy lies at the heart of the prolonged and hairy "net neutrality" debate over what Internet service providers (ISPs) should charge for their services and what role those companies should play in managing the flow of information over their infrastructures. Take That fans crash ticket sites
The group announced an initial run of 13 UK dates Ticket websites have crashed as fans rush to buy tickets to see Take That and Robbie Williams perform together for the first time in 16 years. Tickets for the reformed group's UK stadium dates went on sale at 0900 BST. But sites including Ticketmaster, See Tickets, Ticketline and The Ticket Factory all buckled under the strain. Police have warned fans not to buy from unofficial agencies, whom they said may not fulfil orders and may use personal details in identity theft. Hundreds of fans have also been queuing at venue box offices and trying to get through to phone hotlines. A Take That spokesperson urged fans to keep trying. "Due to totally unprecedented demand this morning, all ticket agents have struggled to cope with the number of people logging on to try and buy Take That tickets," a statement said. "The technology available has not been able to keep up with demand. However all ticket agents are confident they will be able to process all enquiries so are asking fans to keep trying." “Why do sites not prepare for mornings like this?”Ailbhe Maher Take That fan, via Twitter The group have announced initial dates in Sunderland, Manchester, Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham and London in May, June and July. They will also take the show across Europe. The Ticket Factory website returned an error message saying there were "too many concurrent users", while Ticketmaster.co.uk said: "Service Unavailable." Meanwhile, hundreds of tickets appeared on eBay and other secondary websites at inflated prices. Fans took to Twitter to vent their anger at the difficulties getting onto official ticket sites. "Why do sites not prepare for mornings like this?" wrote Ailbhe Maher. "So annoying! Still no tickets. How long do you keep trying?" Another fan, Ellen Hawksworth, wrote: "Two computers, a phone and still no luck. "Annoys me that people are selling them on eBay when people who want to go can't get them." The official agencies are Gigs and Tours, The Ticket Factory, Ticketline and Ticketmaster. Gigs In Scotland is selling tickets for Hampden Park in Glasgow, Event Travel is offering hotal packages and Mark Butler is selling VIP tickets. The band's last UK tour - without Williams - was seen by a record-breaking one million people in 2009. Williams rejoined the group this summer. Their new album, Progress, will be released next month. Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow recently sang together at the Help For Heroes concert Earlier this week, Williams said the gigs would include a mixture of his solo material and the band's hits. "There's going to be a bit for everybody," he told a press conference in London. "I'm going to be doing a bit, the lads are going to be doing a bit, then we're all going to be doing a bit." Gary Barlow added: "Some fans might be coming just to see Rob, some fans might be coming to see the four of us, some fans will be coming to see the five of us. "On this night, they'll get to see us all doing our individual bits." Last summer Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald performed 20 stadium concerts. Their Circus tour was named the biggest ever staged in the UK and Ireland, beating tours by U2 and Michael Jackson. Williams has also been one of the country's most popular live acts since leaving the group in 1995.At no time should you endanger yourself or others, take any unnecessary risks or infringe any laws. Kanye West's 'Runaway' Film: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet
From 'Armageddon' to 'Under the Cherry Moon,' 'Ye took cues from all over.By James Montgomery
Kanye West and Selita Ebanks in "Runaway"
Photo: Def Jam
Here at MTV News, we like to cover the story from all angles, which is why, one day after publishing our high-culture cheat sheet for Kanye West's "Runaway" film, we're back with the lowbrow accompaniment. It's somewhat fitting, because while West's film is no doubt arty and abstract, it's also a big-budget, popcorn event too, the kind of thing that's littered with fast cars and explosions and lyrical nods to the Kings of Leon and Alec Baldwin.
So, really, we'd be doing a disservice — to West, his fans and Alec Baldwin — if we didn't do a pop-culture cheat sheet for the film. So here, alphabetized for your perusing pleasure, is our list of the films, fruits and, uh, fleshy abdominals that are referenced in "Runaway." And though our list is extensive, it's probably not perfect, so if there's something we missed, let us know in the comments below!
"Armageddon": The 1998 Michael Bay blockbuster about a team of deep-core drillers hired by NASA to save the earth from a rapidly advancing asteroid. Shockingly not based on actual events. The film is loaded with special-effects shots of fiery bits of space ephemera rocketing through the atmosphere, just like the opening scene of "Runaway." You could just as easily put "Deep Impact" in here too, since they're basically the same film.
"Bambi": Classic Disney film from 1948 about an orphaned deer and his adorable pals Thumper and Flower. The scene in which Bambi's mother is shot by a hunter is credited by some for helping the animal-rights movement gain traction around the world. None of that really applies to "Runaway," but there are plenty of cute little deer in it.
Blueberries: Antioxidant-rich flowering plants of the genus vaccinium. For reasons clear only to West, the table in the "Runaway" dinner sequence is covered in blueberries, though, according to some, they symbolize eternity and optimism of the future. Also, they are delicious.
"The Brother From Another Planet": Odd 1984 film from director John Sayles about a mute alien who crashes in New York City. The fact that "the Brother" is only distinguishable from other men by the three large toes he has on each foot seems to have been echoed in the phoenix's large golden claws.
Every single action movie ever: Over the past two decades, nearly every action movie made has featured a scene in which the hero turns his or her back and strides confidently away from a gigantic explosion (usually, this scene is shot in slow-motion). It's gotten so bad that the Lonely Island comedy troupe even released a song called "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions." And, well, in "Runaway," Kanye is guilty of the same thing, scooping up Selita Ebanks and walking away from a massive fireball — in slow-motion, of course.
"The Fifth Element": Tongue-in-cheek 1997 Luc Besson sci-fi film about a cab driver (and ex-special forces soldier) who rescues a mysterious, childlike alien/ "supreme being" with bright orange hair. Turns out, she's the key to saving the entire universe from destruction. Also turns out that like the phoenix in "Runaway," she spends a whole lot of time sniffing stuff and pawing at inanimate objects.
"Marie Antoinette": Eye-catching, vaguely anachronistic 2006 Sofia Coppola film about the teenage bride of Louis XVI, who eventually becomes the very frivolous queen of France. The elaborate dinner scene in "Runaway" — and, in particular, West and Ebanks' stilted interactions at it — remind us of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI's initial meeting at an equally lavish dinner party.
Rose, Amber: Bodacious model and socialite/ former paramour of West. Their relationship made headlines, and West makes a joking reference to the tabloid coverage of Rose's sexual preferences in "Runaway," when, during the dinner scene, a guest compliments him on the phoenix's beauty, then rhetorically asks, "Do you know she's a bird?"
"Splash": The 1984 romantic comedy about a New York City man who falls in love with a mermaid; the parallels between it and "Runaway" should be fairly obvious, though the dinner scene — in which the phoenix sniffs at a terrine, dips her claws in a glass of champagne and fumbles a loaf of bread — instantly made us think of the famous bit in "Splash" where the mermaid is invited to a White House dinner and proceeds to horrify guests by devouring a lobster, shell and all.
Situation, the: Bulgy, egomaniacal star of MTV's "Jersey Shore" most famous for his rippling abs and for being on "Dancing With the Stars" for about three minutes. His six-pack makes an appearance in "Runaway" on the midsection of Selita Ebanks' phoenix, who, moves it, shakes it and just ... wow.
Tarantino, Quentin: Academy Award-winning writer/director who is also an unconscionably bad actor. We're not saying West's directorial chops are quite to Tarantino's level just yet, but acting-wise, well, the two are pretty much on par.
"Under the Cherry Moon": Slightly disastrous 1986 Prince vehicle about a gigolo who scams rich women out of their inheritances. Presented in black-and-white and featuring lavish sets, costumes and musical numbers, it was arty, ambitious and a total flop at the box office. Fans who saw advance screenings of "Runaway" in New York mentioned "Cherry Moon" as an obvious reference point for West's film, and we tend to agree. In particular, the dapper tuxedo 'Ye wears during the film's centerpiece musical performance seems to be a loving nod to the Purple One's outfit in "Moon."

W2607C LCD TV with the same W2600 power issue
My Dell W2607C LCD TV has the same no power issue. I had it less than 3 years and have taken really good care of it.I shut it off after watching some tv to go get dinner. Two hours later I tried turning it on and I got nothing. Not even a blink of the LCD. Power LED turned blue, then blinked orange.A week ago I finally called Dell Customer service. Of course, I was on hold for nearly 20 minutes. After giving all the pertinent information regarding my Dell 26"LCD/TV, the operator (in very broken english, I might add) guided me thru all the troubleshooting steps I had done already. None of the troubleshooting worked. She tried pulling the old "contact your cable company" line, but I told her the cable is fine cause it's also plugged into a second tv. She then tried to explain that since it was out of warranty it could not be replaced. I didn't leave it at that and began to explain how Dell sold me a defective product and that I have had LCD monitors and TVs last longer than 2 years and how it was unfair for a loyal customer to be treated in this way. She then tried to send me off to another tech support service, but the only difference is that they were gonna charge me. I said 'No' and then asked for her supervisor. He tried to give the same line about 'out of warranty' and I told him that this is not an uncommon problem and that if he googled 'Dell 26" TV not powering up', he'd see that there are a lot of consumers out there with the same problem as me.He then said, "Oh but the problem you speak of is with the 2600 series model not yours, yours is the 2607C." I replied, without hesitation, "But it is still part of the same series, is it not? And it looks like the same problem was overlooked when they made the one I bought."I was told someone of a 'higher authority' would contact me but their calls have been rather erratic and I cannot return their calls only leave voicemails. I do get emails saying how they just tried calling and when they say that they would call between a certain time the next, I end up wasting time waiting for a call that never comes. As a last resort, I am posting on here in hopes that I will get response and not have to deal with scripted customer service.I have ordered from Dell recently, out of good faith. If I'm stuck with a very expensive paperweight, I might as well returned my recent purchases and cut off all ties with Dell completely.more about cell phone spy....

Torture 'abhorrent' says MI6 head
Sir John Sawers said MI6 staff would have "nothing whatsoever" to do with tortureThe head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, has described torture as "illegal and abhorrent" and defended the service's need for secrecy. He said his organisation faced "real, constant operational dilemmas" to avoid using intelligence which had been gathered by torture. He also said secrecy was "not a dirty word" and played "a crucial part in keeping Britain safe and secure". He is the first serving MI6 chief to make a public speech in its 100 years. Related stories Known in Whitehall as C, the 55-year-old was speaking at a meeting of the Society of Editors in London. He said: "Torture is illegal and abhorrent under any circumstances and we have nothing whatsoever to do with it. "If we know or believe action by us will lead to torture taking place, we're required by UK and international law to avoid that action, and we do, even though that allows that terrorist activity to go ahead. "Some may question this. But we are clear that it's the right thing to do. It makes us strive even harder to find different ways, consistent with human rights, to get the outcome we want. "Suppose we received credible intelligence that might save lives, here or abroad. We have a professional and moral duty to act on it. We will normally want to share it with those who can save those lives," he said. Innocent lives "We also have a duty to do what we can to ensure that a partner service will respect human rights. That is not always straightforward. "Yet if we hold back, and don't pass that intelligence, out of concern that a suspect terrorist may be badly treated, innocent lives may be lost that we could have saved. "These are not abstract questions just for philosophy courses or searching editorials, they are real, constant operational dilemmas. Sometimes there is no clear way forward. The more finely-balanced judgment have to be made by ministers themselves." “It's an enormous tribute to the men and women of our intelligence and security agencies and to our cooperation to our partners services around the world, that so few of these appalling plots develop into real terrorist attacks”Sir John Sawers It was essential for MI6 agents and other intelligence agencies to be sure that their secrets were protected, in order to succeed in countering any terror threat, he added, saying his organisation was the "secret front line" protecting Britain. "Secrecy is not a dirty word. Secrecy is not there as a cover-up. Secrecy plays a crucial part in keeping Britain safe and secure. "Secret organisations need to stay secret, even if we present an occasional public face, as I am doing today. If our operations and methods become public, they won't work. Agents take risks. "They will not work with SIS [Secret Intelligence Service], will not pass us the secrets they hold, unless they can trust us not to expose them. Our foreign partners need to have certainty that what they tell us will remain secret, not just most of the time, but always." He also said there was "no single reason for the terrorist phenomenon". He added: "Some blame political issues like Palestine or Kashmir or Iraq. Others cite economic disadvantage, distortions of the Islamic faith, male supremacy, the lack of normal checks and balances in some countries. There are many theories. "I've worked a lot in the Islamic world. I agree with those who say we need to be steady and stand by our friends. Over time, moving to a more open system of government in these countries, one more responsive to people's grievances, will help. "But if we demand an abrupt move to the pluralism that we in the West enjoy, we may undermine the controls that are now in place. And terrorists will end up with new opportunities." Sir John also said that the "most draining aspect" of his job was reading daily intelligence reports describing the plotting of terrorists "bent on maiming and murdering people in this country". He added: "It's an enormous tribute to the men and women of our intelligence and security agencies and to our cooperation to our partners services around the world, that so few of these appalling plots develop into real terrorist attacks." Before being appointed head of MI6, Sir John was the UK's permanent representative to the UN. Before that he was political director at the Foreign Office, an envoy in Baghdad and a foreign affairs adviser to former Prime Minister Tony Blair. He has also worked in the British embassy in Washington, as an ambassador in Cairo and to South Africa from 1988 and 1991 when apartheid was ending. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Man held for 'DC Metro bomb plot'
The man was alleged to have done surveillance at a station A man has been arrested over a plot to bomb subway stations in the US capital. Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, Virginia was conspiring with people he believed were from al-Qaeda, the Department of Justice said. Mr Ahmed was taken into custody on Wednesday morning. If convicted he faces up to 50 years in prison. The suspect allegedly conducted surveillance of a metro station in Arlington, on the outskirts of Washington, DC, on four occasions. Mr Ahmed's arrest is the latest in a line of investigations of US citizens or residents for involvement in alleged domestic terror plots. Last year there were arrests over plans for attacks in Texas, Colorado and Illinois. More recently Faisal Shahzad was convicted of attempting to bomb Times Square in New York. DocumentPDF download Farooque Ahmed indictment[269k]Most computers will open PDF documents automatically, but you may need Adobe ReaderDownload the reader here "It's chilling that a man from Ashburn is accused of casing rail stations with the goal of killing as many Metro riders as possible through simultaneous bomb attacks," said US attorney Neil MacBride. "Today's arrest highlights the terrorism threat that exists in northern Virginia and our ability to find those seeking to harm US citizens and neutralise them before they can act." Three counts Officials said the public were never in danger during the investigation and that they had been aware of Mr Ahmed since the beginning. Mr Ahmed, who was born in Pakistan, has been indicted on three counts. These are attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organisation, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility, and attempting to provide material support to help carry out multiple bombings. The indictment against Mr Ahmed said that on 18 April he drove to a hotel in Dulles, Virginia, to meet someone who he believed was a terrorist courier who had details of locations for future meetings. Officials said that on 15 May, at a nearby hotel in Herndon, Virginia, Mr Ahmed agreed to carry out surveillance on a hotel in Washington and a metro station in Arlington, Virginia, to determine security and the busiest times. Mr Ahmed, according to the indictment, later provided a USB stick with video of the station to a person he believed was from al-Qaeda. On 28 September, Mr Ahmed allegedly handed over another USB drive with more images of stations. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Kristen Stewart Recalls Being 'Sensitive' After 'Welcome To The Rileys'
Actress told us she would 'kill' someone for looking at a girl the wrong way, but she chalked the quote up to 'feeling a little spunky that day.'By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

At Sundance this past January, well over a year after Kristen Stewart wrapped shooting on "Welcome to the Rileys," the actress told us that playing the part of Mallory, a teen runaway turned prostitute, had changed her outlook on the interaction between men and women.
"I think I'm just a little bit sensitive," she admitted to MTV News. "If you looked at a girl wrong now, I would fly across the room and kill you. It's like I feel so, so, so protective of a certain thing women have."
While KStew still maintains that the role has shaped her, she stops short of using such forceful language and laughed about what she said back in Sundance. "I was probably feeling a little spunky that day," she told us.
And just for the record, she hasn't had any run-ins with inappropriate guys since Sundance — "luckily," she added, noting that over time she's become less thin-skinned, though no less connected to her character.
"I was overtly sensitive, more so than she would be," Stewart explained. "I was so touchy with that kind of thing. That's probably what I was talking about."
To really understand how Stewart was feeling when she dropped that "kill" quote, we have to flash back to Sundance, when she spoke at length about the role she called the most personal of her career.
"It's about understanding who you're playing, and you have a responsibility because you feel like you can't let them down," she told us back then. "[My character] really became a part of me. I haven't felt so personally involved in something. If I sort of flippantly played some stripper — there are some lines I thought were really funny in the movie — I think that's good, but at the same time, I didn't want to make something superficial."

'Paranormal Activity 2': Five Burning Questions Answered
Director Tod Williams reveals the secrets behind the sequel's major twists.By Eric Ditzian
Tod Williams
Photo: MTV News
On Friday, as "Paranormal Activity 2" kicked off its scream-inducing run to the #1 spot at the weekend box office, we revealed five secrets from the film's production: everything from how the plot developed to how they pulled off special effects.
But there were a few secrets that were simply too spoilery to spill then. Now, though, with "Paranormal Activity 2" having reeled in an estimated $41.5 million, we're moving ahead and answering some of the film's most burning questions (needless to say, major spoilers exist below).
How They Got the Prequel/Sequel Idea
As "Paranormal Activity 2" begins, it's very refreshing — not to mention super-freaking cool — to realize that it's taking place two months before the events of the first "PA." And, wow, it's a mind-frak to realize that the final scenes take place after the plot of the first "PA." The result is sort of a prequel/sequel hybrid.
How the heck did filmmakers come up with such an original idea?
Director Tod Williams told MTV News that the prequel was always part of the plan but the sequel idea popped up during production of the film.
"There was an idea to do a prequel right away. Like everybody, I thought there's no way to make a sequel to this movie," he said. "And when I read Michael Perry's initial idea of how to approach the movie, I got really excited because that's exactly the way you have to do it.
And then in terms of how it evolved to wrap around [the first movie], that came in the making. We got really excited when he discovered it, because I don't think any other movie has that structure. I'm unaware of it. There's no word for it."
Any suggestions?
"Simul-quel, maybe," Williams said.
Why They Introduce Katie That Way
Katie (Katie Featherston), of course, was one of the two main characters in "PA." Let's just say that things don't end well for her.
In "PA 2," you've just started to process the idea that the story is a prequel when who arrives at the family's door? It's Katie, sister of Kristi, one of the new movie's main characters. It's a satisfying reveal and has drawn gasps from audiences, but it wasn't the filmmakers' original idea.
Rather, they had an idea to cut to a shot of Katie holding Kristi's baby, leaving audiences perplexed. Ultimately, though, they felt that reveal wouldn't be true to the spirit of the first film.
"We toyed with the idea of her coming into the nursery and tending to the baby," Williams said. "We were going to save her reveal for then and play that as, 'Is that her? That's creepy. What's going on?' And then we decided to go with this version, which is get it out right out front. ['PA' creator] Oren [Peli] has an idea that you have to be honest and straightforward with an audience, and we tried to stick to that idea."
Why They Cast Sprague Grayden as Katie's Sister
The identity of the "PA 2" cast was kept strictly under wraps in the run-up to the film's release. Only when midnight screenings began last week did we learn that Sprague Grayden ("Jericho," "24") was cast as Kristi. The role was the hardest for filmmakers to cast, and they only settled on Grayden at the last minute.
"We spent a lot of time and saw hundreds of people in L.A. We realized we had to go beyond L.A. We got actors from New York and Chicago,"
Williams said. "The one that was the hardest was Kristi because of everything we set up in the first film and the person had to be able to work in this kind of [improvisatory] environment and look like Katie.
It really was a hard one. [Sprague] came in right when we needed her to. It was a lucky thing that happened for us."
How They Built the Scares
"PA 2" begins like something of a romantic comedy: A new family moves into a house, filming their new surroundings with a camcorder and joking around at all times. The horror elements start from next to nothing — a creepily turning mobile above the baby's crib — until they build to jump-out-of-your-seat moments.
Some viewers have argued that the scares simply don't come quickly enough, but Williams has an entirely different philosophy when it comes to frightening an audience that fell in love with the original film.
"Following up on a movie like 'Paranormal Activity,' where the expectations are very high, is tricky," he said. "Oren Peli's film was so perfectly modulated. We knew that if we went and tried to scare the pants off you in the first minute, your guard is up. We've got to get you past the point where you think you're prepared and just when you forget it's coming, that's when we come. Knowing that these movies are all about doing a lot with a little, we had to do everything very, very subtly."
Why the Movie Ends the Way It Does
In the final scenes, a now demonically possessed Katie returns to Kristi's house and kills her sister and brother-in-law. Frightening and unexpected, to say the least. Exactly how Katie committed those murders, however, changed during production. Williams said he shot a very bloody version of the murders but decided that such gore did not fit within the larger framework of the film.
"Normally you spend two years writing a screenplay and auditioning all these ideas," he explained. "We didn't have that time. But we did have a production environment that was exceedingly easy to run and operate.
Every idea was auditioned in the doing of it."

Password advice from the father of the firewall
As more and more personal business is conducted online, passwords (make that dozens of passwords) have become a necessary evil of daily life. We all know the rules for coming up with good passwords, or at the very least we hopefully know there are rules--choose an alphanumeric combination, don't write it down, don't use it for multiple accounts, etc. [More]

Power Hackers: The U.S. Smart Grid Is Shaping Up to Be Dangerously Insecure
President Barack Obama’s talk about the need for a “smart grid” sounds, well, smart. What’s not to like about the idea of an electricity grid that can work at top efficiency? By wrapping power transmission lines in advanced information technologies and the Internet, a smart grid would enable us to integrate alternative energy sources such as rooftop solar panels and local wind turbines into the power supply, balance supply with demand and optimize the flow of power to each consumer--even down to the level of individual appliances. It would vastly improve the reliability, availability and efficiency of the electric system. As currently envisaged, however, it’s a dangerously dumb idea. The problem is cybersecurity. Achieving greater efficiency and control requires hooking almost every aspect of the electricity grid up to the Internet--from the smart meter that will go into each home to the power transmission lines themselves. Connecting what are now isolated systems to the Internet will make it possible to gain access to remote sites through the use of modems, wireless networks, and both private and public networks. And yet little is being done to make it all secure. [More]

Getting Personal: A Q&A with a PARC Pioneer Reflecting on "The Office of the Future" 40 Years Later
The days before every workstation came equipped with a PC, Internet connection and e-mail can seem quaint to us now--a simpler time when the clacking of typewriters filled the air in office buildings, an instant message was walking over to someone's desk and talking to them, and file clerks were entrusted to organize and protect top secret information vaulted inside steel cabinets. Nevertheless, to a large extent, today's sprawling array of software apps, wireless gadgets and social networks owe their existence to a team of researchers that was assembled 40 years ago in California's fledgling Silicon Valley to envision and create "the office of the future". Taiwan's promotional strategy is wide-ranging: from arts to food and fashion to the traditional high-tech sector Often mistaken for being under China's sovereignty and sometimes even for being Thailand, Taiwan is pushing hard to stake out a more distinct international image. In the past year, even as relations with China have improved, Taiwan's government has been stepping up efforts to raise the island's profile. It is part of a strategy promoted by President Ma Ying-jeou, who says Taipei must increase its so-called "soft power" if it is to stand on the international stage. The strategy is wide-ranging. It includes developing globally famous brands, boosting Taiwan's presence not only in the high-tech sector but also in arts, food and fashion, and marketing great things about Taiwan. As a result, the government has poured millions of dollars into supporting performance troupes, filmmakers and even pop singers. Some of them have enjoyed regional or international acclaim, including a government-funded film that won an award at the Berlin International Film Festival this year. There are plans to spend $200m (£128m) to help the movie industry. Money has also been allotted for promoting tourism, and not just to boost economic growth. Previously content with being just a manufacturer of the world's high-tech products, Taiwan now wants to be a place where everybody wants to visit and get to know. Not promoting itself in the past partly explains why it only gets about four million visitors a year - much less than the smaller Singapore. The president and his wife are spearheading efforts to raise Taiwan's profile So in the past year, Taipei has touted Taiwan's tourism wonders on advertisements on London buses, the BBC and CNN, and high-profile places such as New York's Time Square. The government also promotes Taiwan abroad through cultural festivals and culinary events, including in Britain and Canada. The state-funded wire service, the Central News Agency, meanwhile, has been revamped. It now offers its stories written in English about Taiwan on Google and - for the first time - English video news about the island. At the same time, Taiwan's government continues to provide generous humanitarian assistance to countries struck by disasters. It has also sent First Lady Chow Mei-ching on more official visits overseas than most Taiwanese first ladies go on - including to Germany, Italy and Haiti, where she promotes Taiwan's performance troupes, reads stories to children, and hugs disaster victims. “People around the world would care if they know more about Taiwan and if they think Taiwan is different from China”Kou Chien-wen National Chengchi University in Taipei And later this year, Taiwan will open Taiwan Academies - similar to the British Council - to promote Taiwanese culture and the learning of Chinese language abroad. These schools will be opened partly in response to the hundreds of Confucius Institutes China established overseas in recent years. "It's soft power. Taiwan no longer depends on diplomacy or the military to boost its power. We want to do more to contribute to the world. We'll use our resources to promote Taiwan," says former presidential office spokesman Wang Yu-chih. Analysts believe these efforts are partly aimed at distinguishing Taiwan from China and ensuring the world does not forget the democratic and self-ruled Taiwan's cause - to be recognised as a country and included in international decision-making bodies. "Like European countries, which are not militarily strong, this sort of thing raises their image," says Kou Chien-wen, a political science professor specialising in Taiwan-China relations at National Chengchi University in Taipei. "Take Norway for example, it has the Nobel peace prize; when we think of it, we think well of it. Finland has Nokia, which also helps that country's image." High-profile figures like Yani Tseng have also helped raise Taiwan's profile It is feared that not having a noticeable presence in the international community could hurt the island of 23 million people if there is conflict with its giant neighbour China - which considers Taiwan part of its territory which should be eventually reunited. "Taiwan will be considered politically unimportant, economically unimportant, and culturally unimportant. That's a crisis for Taiwan," says Mr Kou. "A not so well-known country invaded by a bigger country... People around the world would care if they know more about Taiwan and if they think Taiwan is different from China."Besides the government, Taiwanese people also have a strong desire for Taiwan to be recognised. Many are irked when people assume they are from China or when maps lump Taiwan as a part of China. Taiwanese citizens who succeed on the international stage often take the chance to promote Taiwan. CHINA-TAIWAN RELATIONSRuled separately since end of Chinese civil war in 1949China considers the island part of its territoryChina has offered a "one country, two systems" solution, like Hong KongMost in Taiwan support status quoRelations between Beijing and Taipei have been improving in recent years since pro-Beijing President Ma Ying-jeou took power in Taiwan Athletes, for instance, drape Taiwan's national flag over themselves in awards ceremonies, even though that flag is not used in the Olympics or other gatherings of nations, due to China's objections. Government efforts aside, individual Taiwanese people have in some ways done more to gain fame for the island this year. They include golfer Yani Tseng, who shot to fame after becoming the youngest player in LPGA history to win three major championships; Lin Yu-chun, an amateur singer who received millions of views on YouTube; and Chen Shu-chu, a vegetable seller named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people for her philanthropy. Mr Ma has seized the opportunity to praise them for boosting Taiwan's image. Even when people who had left Taiwan years ago become famous - such as American fashion designer Jason Wu of Michelle Obama-inauguration dress fame - the president misses no opportunity to highlight their Taiwan connections. He gave Mr Wu star treatment on his recent visit here, meeting him at the presidential office and lavishing praise on him. The effects of Taiwan's efforts to boost its profile may be too early to tell. For many Taiwanese people, success will depend on whether Taiwan is included in international organisations. Attempts to join them in the past had been blocked by China. After Taiwan began improving ties with Beijing in 2008, it was allowed to participate in the World Health Assembly - the decision-making body of the World Health Organization, as an observer. But it is still excluded from other international organisations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) - which deals with flight safety - and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Ultimately, many Taiwanese people want Taiwan to be given what they see as its rightful status and long overdue inclusion in global affairs. "We are a country; why can't we be recognised as such?" asked elementary school principal Chen Shu-chuan, reflecting the views of many Taiwanese people. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

County Invokes Federal Statutes to Have Input on Federal Land Policies
In a proactive effort to ensure Jackson County government has input on Federal land policies that affect local land, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners has passed Board Order #186-10. The order, signed by all three commissioners ? Dennis C.W. Smith, Jack Walker, and Dave Gilmour ? invokes Federal statutes including those governing the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service requiring coordination of decisions concerning the use of Federal lands with affected local governments.
Currently the Jackson County Natural Resources Advisory Committee, in consultation with County Counsel and the Development Services Department, is working to prepare a coordination plan that will protect and enhance Jackson County's economy while promoting the responsible employment of resources on and in the Federal Lands.
"This is an excellent opportunity in which Jackson County can have more practical, realistic input into policies that affect Federal lands," said Smith. "It is one more tool in an effort to make sure our local communities have as much input and influence in the decision making process on Federal lands, which are half of Jackson County's land base."
Language in the Board Order states: "The Jackson County Board of Commissioners is vitally interested in protecting and enhancing Jackson County's economy while promoting the responsible employment of resources on and in the Federal lands, and decisions concerning the Federal lands at the Federal level could have significant effects on the availability of those lands for responsible uses, thereby affecting Jackson County's economy."
Other counties which have taken this step to invoke Federal statutes to coordinate with local governments include Josephine County, Modoc County, and Wallowa County in Oregon, and Siskiyou County in California.
"By coordinating with Federal agencies, we have the legal standing to talk about what the impacts are to our communities when the Federal government makes decisions that impact our economy and job base. It also ensures that Federal policy is more cognizant of the local communities," said Smith.
Federal land policy impacts local issues such as the agricultural base with grazing laws, road construction and decommission, and forest natural resources and recreational usage.
Coordination with Federal agencies will involve Jackson County staff, County Counsel, and the Jackson County Natural Resources Advisory consulting in determining impacts of Federal decisions.
For more information, please contact Danny Jordan, Jackson County Administrator, at (541) 774-6003.cell phones cell phone spyware cell spy mobile spy

Judges removed from Wilders trial
Geert Wilders says freedom of speech in the Netherlands is on trial Judges in the hate speech trial of Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders have been ordered to step down by an independent appeals panel. The move follows a request by Mr Wilders' lawyers who said they feared the judges were biased against him. The legal process that began in January must now begin again with new judges. The trial itself started in October. Mr Wilders faces five charges of inciting hatred and discrimination against Muslims. If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail. A hastily convened panel at the Amsterdam District Court ruled on Friday that the objections of Mr Wilders' legal team were valid. Geert-Jan Alexander Knoops, an international criminal law professor at Utrecht University, told Reuters that the ruling meant there would be new judges and a new date. "This means that the trial has to start all over again. Not the investigation phase, but the court sessions as the new judges will not have been present at the hearings," he said. Under scrutiny in the trial are statements Mr Wilders made between 2006 and 2008, including calling Islam "fascist" and likening the Koran to Hitler's book Mein Kampf. Mr Wilders' Freedom Party is the third biggest in the Netherlands after elections in June, and is expected to play a key role in the next parliament. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Hero's welcome?
Russia's spies were whisked away from a Moscow airport In the bad old days, homecoming spies could expect heroes' welcomes in Moscow, their faces on commemorative postage stamps and lifelong adulation. But that, of course, was when they were fighting evil empires, rather than living the suburban American dream. Today's returning spies seem to have done little hard work - or at least little work for the Russian state. The glamorous Anna Chapman, for example, appears to have spent more time flogging private planes to Russian oligarchs. But they have all been offered a Moscow flat and a $2,000 (£1,327) state pension - the sort of riches plenty of Muscovites can still only dream of.The Russian press are treating the entire episode with a mixture of humour and disdain. Our Man in Havana, James Wormold, passed off mundane details as secrets One commenter observed: "It reminds me of Graham Greene's Our Man in Havana where the spy convinces his Centre that a diagram of a vacuum cleaner is the blueprint for a new secret weapon." The radio station Ekho Moskvy has announced a cartoon contest on the topic of the returning spies. But there are plenty of Russians who say the spies "just weren't up to the job". With the exception of the redheaded Anna Chapman, who will doubtless soon be offered a talk show and a column on a British tabloid, they do look like a dull lot compared to their Soviet forerunners - who were very good indeed at their jobs. EAST-WEST PRISONER SWAPS1962: KGB Colonel Rudolf Abel freed by US in exchange for Gary Powers, pilot of a U-2 spy plane shot down over the USSR in 19601964: Gordon Lonsdale, real name Konon Molody, member of the Portland spy ring, is returned to the USSR1969: UK frees Soviet agents Peter and Helen Kroger for Gerald Brooke, jailed for spying in USSR1981: Guenter Guillaume, agent for East Germany's Stasi, exchanged for Western agents1986: Soviet dissident Anatoly Sharansky and three Western agents swapped for KGB husband-and-wife spies Karl and Hana Koecher and two other agentsUS and Russia in airport spy swap Who is on the 'spy-swap' list? The old Soviet-era spies tended to be a cheerful lot, full of joie de vivre - it is perhaps their capacity for jollity that made them successful. Mikhail Lyubimov, who spied in London in the 1980s, once told me that former spies should form an international association aimed at promoting international understanding. "With our experience, we are by far the best equipped to work towards bettering understandings between nations," he said, only semi-seriously. A former colleague, who was kicked out of Japan for spying, went on to have a successful career writing books that opened Japanese culture to Russian readers.Nevertheless, it cannot be easy to come home after years of exile. Russia has changed a lot in the last 10 years: the rouble rate is confusing, cars are different, the metro works in a different way, attitudes have changed. Soviet spy Gordon Lonsdale, otherwise known as Konon Molody And let us not forget that these spies have, between them, eight children who were born in the US. Since their parents were pretending not to be Russian, they probably do not even speak a word of the language. Although they will be allowed to settle in Russia, will they want to? Even in Soviet days, some found it difficult to cope with life after a spy swap. The Koechers, who returned to Czechoslovakia following a swap in the 1980s, never properly re-integrated, nor did the Russian spies the Krogers/Cohens, who were flown to Moscow in 1969. Despite being awarded a dacha and numerous state honours, they never recovered emotionally and lived isolated lives, refusing even to learn Russian. Gordon Lonsdale/Konon Molody, swapped during the Cold War, suffered from depression after his return to the Soviet Union and died mysteriously during a mushroom-picking expedition. The manner of this latest swap had all the fun of the Cold War - you could almost hear the opening strains of the Third Man, watching the aeroplane ballet on the Vienna tarmac. But although the spies will not be paupers, their lives may not be easy. El Reg love: ?Dell?s DCS is a big shiny server star?
Timothy Prickett Morgan of everyone’s favorite vulture-branded media site The Register attended a round table discussion we held a few weeks ago in New York. His piece from that event, which was focused around the cloud, was posted yesterday.
You should check out the whole article but here are some snippets to whet your appetite:
What DCS is all about
For the past several years – and some of them not particularly good ones – Dell’s Data Center Services (DCS) bespoke iron-making forge down in Round Rock, Texas, has been a particularly bright spot in the company’s enterprise business.
The unit has several hundred employees, who craft and build custom server kit for these picky Webby shops, where power and cooling issues actually matter more than raw performance. The high availability features necessary to keep applications running are in the software, so you can rip enterprise-class server features out of the boxes – they are like legs on a snake.
How we’re working with web-based gaming company OnLive
“These guys took a bet on Facebook early, and they benefited from that,” says Perlman [OnLive Founder and CEO]. “And now they are making a bet on us.”
OnLive allows gamers to play popular video games on their PCs remotely through a Web browser and soon on their TVs with a special (and cheap) HDMI and network adapter. The games are actually running back in OnLive’s data centers, and the secret sauce that Perlman has been working on to make console games work over the Internet and inside of a Web browser is what he called “error concealment”.
DCS had to create a custom server to integrate their video compression board into the machine, as well as pack in some high-end graphics cards to drive the games. Power and cooling are big issues. And no, you can’t see the servers. It’s a secret.

Missy Elliott Says She's 'Just Behind The Scenes Right Now'
MC/producer says she's been focusing on artists like Jazmine Sullivan but plans to drop a new single, 'Blow Your Whistle.'By Mawuse Ziegbe
Missy Elliott
Photo: MTV News
Missy Elliott spent the better part of the late '90s and early 2000s concocting elaborate and often nutty visuals, rocking absolute craziness in those visuals, spitting slick rhymes and cooing breathy vocals. Oh, and she created some of R&B and hip-hop's most memorable hits, from her woozy, bass-heavy 1997 debut track, "The Rain," to the wobbly sass of 2002's "Work It." Factor in chart-topping collabos with everyone from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, and Missy became a one-stop shop for hits.
However, in recent years the inventive MC has retreated from the spotlight, laying low since her jangly 2008 club anthem "Ching-A-Ling." When MTV News recently caught up with the multi-hyphenate star, she said her days in the limelight were numbered and she's turned her focus to nurturing other artists.
"People always be like, 'Where [you] been?' but you gotta remember, I got Jazmine Sullivan out there, I had Monica 'Everything [To Me']," Missy explained on the red carpet for Tao New York's 10th Anniversary Party carpet last week. "I'm always having artists that I'm doing records on so I'm just behind the scenes right now. I did the artist thing, now I'm just writing and producing."
Elliott has been tending to Sullivan, who the MC worked with for years, including producing her 2008 reggae-tinged debut single, "Need U Bad." Elliott said that the Philadelphia songstress is a "beast" and predicts a lengthy career ahead for Sullivan.
"It's been a long time coming but she gon' be around for a long time. She's gon' make people have to step up they singing," Missy beamed. "Jazmine sing from the soul. She sing from a different place. She's not just a singer, she sings from a place where you feel like she been through those things before. And she got a husky voice and we haven't heard that really in R&B in a long time so she [has] a unique voice."
But she's not giving up everything to her protégés. Elliott revealed that although she's primarily staying behind the boards, she plans to drop a "club record" called "Blow Your Whistle," to which she promises fans "gon' be dancing." However, any proper Missy Elliott track needs to be accompanied by an out-of-control visual. Elliott assured fans that her forthcoming single, which will drop "in a minute," won't be any different.
"I gotta figure out this video thing and then we gon' drop it. It's gotta be a whole thing, it's a puzzle for me. It's not just the record, it's about the video too," Elliott said.
She's still tinkering with the concept but she did promise a clip that, for the woman who has donned garbage bags, rhymed in cornfields and swung from chandeliers in her videos, will be quintessentially Missy.
"Something crazy," Elliott smiled. "I'm taking my foot off this time. I don't know. Something crazy though."

Canada 'to jail human smugglers'
Some 490 Tamil migrants from Sri Lanka arrived in British Columbia in August on the MV Sun Sea The Canadian government will introduce mandatory prison sentences of up to 10 years for those convicted of human smuggling, Canadian media reports say. Smuggling more than 50 individuals into Canada and smuggling people for profit or through a criminal organisation could soon land a person in jail. The new legislation is expected to be announced on Thursday in Vancouver, the Toronto Star newspaper reports. The news comes after some 490 Tamil migrants arrived in Canada in August. Related stories "Our immigration system has come under attack by human smugglers. Human smugglers are clearly targeting Canada and are treating our country like a doormat. The problem is growing and must be stopped," the official was quoted as saying in the Toronto Star. The new legislation, which is to be set out by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, will reportedly make it easier to charge and convict smugglers. Current Canadian law requires prosecutors to prove that those aiding in human trafficking did not know the people being smuggled did not have the documents required by law to enter Canada. "A failure to act and act strongly, will inevitably lead to a massive collapse in public support for our immigration system," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said at a citizenship ceremony held on Tuesday. Physics Nobel Prize Goes to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for Graphene's Unusual and Useful Properties
The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics goes to the University of Manchester’s Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for their investigations of the two-dimensional material graphene. Ordinary so-called pencil lead is graphite, a three-dimensional form of carbon. Flat layers of carbon, one-atom thick, are called graphene. The researchers extracted graphene from graphite using ordinary adhesive tape. Both born in Russia, Geim, 52, and Novoselov, just 36, showed that graphene has unusual properties related to quantum effects.Physicist Per Delsing explained at the announcement from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences: “The electronic structure of graphene is very unusual. It’s a transparent conductor and as such it can be used as touch screens, solar cells, light panels. If you put graphene into other materials, such as epoxy or plastic, you can make very light and very strong materials, which is interesting for satellites and aircraft, but it’s also that you can make flexible electronics. And so these are examples of the applications, and the pioneers that really did this were these two gentlemen.” [More]

Kristen Stewart Says 'Welcome To The Rileys' Is 'Perfect' For Twilighters
'One thing that is relatable ... is the whole idea that, unless you respect and like yourself, nobody else is going to,' she tells MTV News.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Despite the fact that she was offered a job at a strip club during the filming of her new movie "Welcome to the Rileys" (an offer she turned down, obviously), Kristen Stewart was eager to step away from the troubled runaway-turned-stripper character she plays in the film.
"It was an incredibly impactful experience," Stewart told MTV News recently. "But at the same time, it's not like I was incredibly altered at the end of it. It's hard to relate to this story, because I couldn't have had a more different upbringing. I can't relate to the kind of loss and weird incomplete feeling or whatever."
Stewart said one thing she was able to wrap her head around — and something she found to be somewhat universal — is the importance of self-respect and self-worth.
"One thing that is generally relatable and I found is perfect for young girls — 'Twilight' fans, actually — is the whole idea that, unless you respect and like yourself, nobody else is going to," Stewart said. "It's always been really easy for me to do that," she admitted, before backpedaling a bit. "I hope that doesn't sound totally f---ing arrogant, but I've always been lucky. ... For so many people, it's so difficult to do that."
Stewart added that, troubled character and all, she had a great time making the film and is really proud of her work in it. "I've totally stepped away from that [feeling of loss and incompleteness, but my character is] also really funny," she said. "As heavy as those ideas are, it was fun playing her, because she's crazy."

In 60 Sec.: Mercedes-Benz 75 HP
The Mercedes 75 HP is a super sports car from a time when speeds of over 300 km/h were dismissed as fully unrealistic. Its 75 HP and maximum speed of 95 km/h would nowadays not normally be associated with a super sports car. But over a hundred years ago, a time without asphalted streets and without a comprehensive network of gas stations, the first Mercedes 6 cylinder was among the sportiest vehicles in the world.mobile phone softwares

Willow Smith's 'Whip My Hair' Video Premieres
Everyone gets in on the hair-whipping action in the colorful clip.By Katie Byrne

As far as pop stars are concerned, Willow Smith is about as unique as they come. For one, there are those famous movie-star parents of hers. Plus, she has a fashion sense that is all her own. Oh yeah, and did we mention she's only 9 years old?
It was all too fitting, then, that the video for her debut single, "Whip My Hair" — which hit her website late Monday (October 18) — drives home the importance of individuality.
The clip opens in an all-white classroom filled with kids who look bored out of their minds. Enter Willow, dressed like a real-life Rainbow Brite, ready to shake these kids out of their routine. Debuting the first of the clip's many hairstyles, Willow dips her long braids into bright-colored paints and begins to whip her hair around and bring some color into the lifeless room.
Everyone gets in on the hair-whipping action throughout the video, including the once-buttoned-up teacher and an adorable toddler. A handclap-filled breakdown in the middle of the video lets Willow and her dancers show off some stepping action.
Jay-Z signed the up-and-comer to his Roc Nation label last month, telling Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview that he first heard "Whip My Hair" before he knew it had been recorded by a 9-year-old. "I was like, 'Man, that record's a smash,' " he recalled. "And then [Roc Nation partner] Jay Brown said, 'She's 9,' and I was like, 'Whoa!' And [then] he was like, 'She's Will and Jada's daughter,' and I was like, 'Whoa!' and it just went from there."
Responding to Seacrest's question about the meaning of "Whip My Hair," Willow said that "it means just be an individual. Like, you can't be afraid to be yourself, you have to be yourself, and you can't let anyone tell you that that's wrong."
