Stephen Dorff Says Jack Nicholson Will Love 'Somewhere'
'I think he'll identify with it so much,' Dorff says about his friend and onetime co-star.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Ever since they shared screen time in the 1997 heist flick "Blood and Wine," actors Stephen Dorff and Jack Nicholson have remained close friends. Their relationship may not necessarily be "bromance" territory, but it's close enough that Dorff has shared his career ups and downs with the Oscar winner, and asked for his advice over the years. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently to talk about his critically acclaimed new film "Somewhere" — a role that he called the most challenging of his career — he said he thinks the flick is one Nicholson will really enjoy.
"I think he's going to really love this movie because to me it's a film that isn't made anymore today," Dorff explained. "It's such a character piece and I think he'll identify with it so much.
Dorff revealed that he already got a big thumbs-up from Nicholson after "Somewhere" took home the top prize at Italy's Venice Film Festival in September.
"After we won Venice, I remember telling him how excited I was," he recalled. "And he's like, 'Way to go, Dorff!' "
We then brought up the fact that Nicholson has taken several actors under his wing over the years — pointing out to Dorff that the Hollywood legend had taken an interest in "Mad Men" actress January Jones when she was first starting out.
"Well, he takes an interest in a lot of women, let's be honest," Dorff responded with a chuckle. "He definitely took me under his wing. I think it's rare for Jack to take a young guy under his wing — he's not hanging out with too many guys.
"He did do that with Sean Penn and he's definitely given me great advice over the years," Dorff added. "I always feel like I have him as a friend and he'll show up if he can. And he's always been my favorite actor, so for me, he's a friend, and it's nice to get a little starstruck still. It keeps me remembering who I am and where I am, and Jack's still somebody that makes me a little nervous."
If Dorff has his way, he and his buddy Jack will take their friendship to the big screen via a comedy the younger actor is hoping to make with Adam Sandler's production company.
"It's a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France," Dorff told the UK's Independent newspaper last month. "We're not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and they've already bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I'll turn that into a script and I'll go and tell Jack. ... And I'll get Sony to give him his $15 million and then we'll go and make the movie — because he likes money."
Check out everything we've got on "Somewhere."

Eminem, Jay-Z's Leaked Track 'Syllables' Was Recorded In 2007
Cashis, who is also featured on the cut, reveals the song was meant for one of Em's albums or Dr. Dre's forthcoming Detox.By James Dinh

Heads were scratched when a dated, top-notch collaboration between some of hip-hop's biggest MCs, including Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Stat Quo, surfaced in the blogosphere yesterday. And while deliberate (and unintentional) leaks happen all the time, it was odd that nobody had ever heard of the all-star cut titled "Syllables." However, Cashis, another one of the track's featured rappers, gave fans some insight into the track in an interview with Vibe.com, admitting his excitement as a then-newly-signed artist to collaborate alongside rap icons.
"I laid my part at Dre's studio with Stat, 50 and Em," Cashis recalls of the track, which talks of the industry's lack of lyrical substance and its reliance on gimmicks. "I heard that Jay had just left when I got there. Fif' was there kicking his verse in another room when I did mine."
But the MC, who had just been signed to Shady Records at the time, confessed that he wasn't nervous to spit alongside the hip-hop heavyweights. "I was more so excited than intimidated because I already had held my own with Em, and I think they believed in me this time. After I kicked my verse, Em, Dre and 50 all said it was dope. That was the cosign I needed. I learned more from that session than any other before that."
While Cashis isn't sure whether the "Syllables" leak was authorized by his label or not, the Slim Shady protégé says that the version that hit the Internet is different "and even better" than the one originally recorded in 2007. The tune was set to be featured on one of Eminem's LPs or Dr. Dre's highly anticipated Detox.
However, the rapper, who released his County Hound EP that same year, reveals that he's remained patient and hardworking while waiting for Eminem to sort through his personal trials in recent years.
"I ain't never left. My position is good over at Shady," the MC says. "Em pulled me to the side when he was coming back and told me the plan. He was going to get himself going again and then put me out. It got to a point where Em didn't want to rap anymore. But I told him to take as long as you want to take. For him to get inspired again is a blessing."

PowerDVD 8.2 DX doesn't play blu-ray
I have updated the Dell XPS 435T Blu-ray BH20N firmware for my Hitachi BD drive to the latest as of Sep 2009 (C104) however I still CAN NOT play a blu-ray disc. I can play a SD DVD though within PowerDVD DX. The exact release is 8.2.5408. I've tried Bourne Ultimatum and Reservoir Dogs but PowerDVD DX does nothing but spin it's progress banner wheel. This is the release of cyberlink powerdvd software that came shipped on DVD with the system.
I have noticed that another poster was given 8.1 software by a dell rep which worked but I believe that was a dated post. Any advice is appreciated based on today's latest and greatest - if any different.more about cell phone spy.... cell phone spy software mobile phone

Cybercrime today: Protect data from cybercriminals
Today, government organizations and businesses face an unprecedented array of threats to the information systems that constitute the backbone of global commercial and civil society. These new Trojans, malware, micro-bots, targeted spam, phishing and other risks are not only appearing in greater numbers, they are also constantly evolving in complexity at a rate that makes devising and implementing effective countermeasures increasingly difficult. The sources of these threats range from nation-states seeking commercial, political, and military advantage, to criminal syndicates that recruit highly talented individuals who conduct constant, and often successful efforts to break into the systems of organizations large and small. One method involves innovative business models created as a result of botnets – collections of compromised computers that become zombies and carry out the commands of cyber scammers. Furthermore, they are applying new software-as-a-service trends to their underground operations with the likes of “Botnets-as-a-Service” and “Malware-as-a-Service.”
Whether conducted by nation states or criminals, cybercrime trends are shifting toward a “for profit” motive and away from the nuisance and notoriety that characterized earlier digital vandalism and mischief. The Verizon 2010 Data Breach Report notes that 70 percent of data breaches resulted from external agents. At the same time, a lot of data loss (48 percent) and risk is self-inflicted via human error, carelessness and disgruntled employees. Any effective cybersecurity environment must protect against both malicious external and internal intent as well as normal everyday human foibles.
Dell is facing these challenges head-on by applying the defense-in-depth, layered approach as well as partnering with leading-edge security vendors such as INTEGRITY Global Security to develop highly secure, client-level solutions.

'Little Fockers' Celebrates At The Holiday Box Office
'Fockers' won a meager first-place prize, while 'True Grit' blasted its way to second place.By Josh Wigler
Ben Stiller in "Little Fockers"

'Tis the season to be jolly, but while the holiday spirit was present in millions of households this past weekend, it wasn't felt with nearly as much fanfare at the movies.
It was a fairly quiet weekend at the box office this holiday season, with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro's "Little Fockers" leading the pack with an estimated $34 million from Friday through Sunday and a five-day total of $48.3 million. But while Jack still has his eye on Greg, few people entered the circle of trust this go-around, as "Fockers," the second sequel to the critically acclaimed "Meet the Parents," failed to match the success of its predecessor "Meet the Fockers," which earned $70.5 million in its first five days in 2004.
Indeed, the second-place showing for "True Grit" was more impressive than the first-place "Fockers" in many respects. For one, the Jeff Bridges-starring Western drew $36.8 million since opening on Wednesday of last week, nearly crushing its entire $38 million production budget in a single session. "True Grit" also marked the single-best opening for any Coen brothers movie to date, easily surpassing the $19.1 million "Burn After Reading" earned in 2008.
"Tron Legacy" remained on the gaming grid this weekend with a third-place finish worth $25.6 million. The movie suffered a steep 54 percent drop from its opening performance last weekend, leaving some to wonder whether Disney's decision to revitalize the science-fiction franchise was a sound one.
The weekend's biggest disappointment was Jack Black's "Gulliver's Travels," which debuted Saturday and ended the weekend in seventh place with $7.2 million. Releasing the film on Christmas Day was a risky gamble on Fox's part, and despite the message that "Gulliver" has to offer, size really does matter when it comes to business, and unfortunately for the studio, the opening numbers on "Gulliver" are simply too small to consider the film anything but a flop.
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Little Fockers" ($34 million)
#2 "True Grit" ($25.6 million)
#3 "Tron Legacy" ($20.1 million)
#4 "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" ($10.8 million)
#5 "Yogi Bear" ($8.8 million)
Upcoming Releases
It's going to be another quiet weekend at the box office next week, with smaller-budget dramas "Another Year" and "Blue Valentine" sneaking in as the weekend's only new releases with a combined total of 10 theaters between the two of them.

Armed and ready
The African Union has a West African standby brigade The West African region has suffered more than its fair share of military coups and civil wars and its leaders have made a clear commitment to ensuring that these come to an end. “Ecowas has been going through a series of exercises, scenario-building. So it is possible that it can take place so quickly”Henry Boshof Institute of Security Studies Three African presidents are due to travel to Ivory Coast on Tuesday to give incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo a final opportunity to leave office, after the UN ruled he had lost last month's elections. If the arrival of the leaders of Cape Verde, Sierra Leone and Benin fails to end the stalemate over last month's elections, West African states have threatened a military intervention if Mr Gbagbo does not step down. The regional grouping Ecowas has a history of using force to restore order, when there is no other option. As early as 1978 the region's nations agreed to refrain from the use of force against each other and this was followed in 1981 by a mutual defence pact. But events in Liberia in the 1990s, when the country descended into civil war, called for more urgent measures.Troops were deployed to Liberia as part of the Ecowas ceasefire monitoring group, known as Ecomog. Its forces were used, with greater or lesser degrees of success, in Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau. Ecomog Timeline 1990 Intervenes in Liberian civil war; presence peaks at 12,000 troops1997 Election of Charles Taylor as Liberian president marks culmination of Liberian mission1997 Deploys large-scale force in Sierra Leone after rebels overthrow President Tejan Kabbah1998 Drives rebels from Sierra Leone capital, reinstates Kabbah as president1999 Deploys peacekeepers in Guinea-Bissau after armed conflict between president and rebel military chief1999 Recaptures Sierra Leone capital Freetown after guerrilla offensive2001 Stations troops on Guinea-Liberia border to stop guerrilla infiltration2002 Sends a 2,000-strong force to Ivory Coast to monitor the ceasefire2003 Sends forces troops to Liberia as President Taylor left office for exile in Nigeria in a deal to end civil warQ&A: Ivory Coast election crisis The region also sent troops into Ivory Coast after the civil war broke out there in 2002 - a task later taken over by the United Nations. As part of the African Union's attempt to head off further crises, a West African standby brigade has been prepared and it is these forces that could then be deployed. Henry Boshoff of the Institute of Security Studies in Pretoria says that once a political decision is made to send the troops they could be in place in a relatively short period of time. "When the political decision is made, it will go to the chief of staff of Ecowas - that is the military command. "They will then do the planning, they will ask then for troop-contributing countries to contribute the force, they will decide on the concept operation - how many troops - and then the readiness of the troops." This could be done as in three to four weeks, he says. "Ecowas has been going through a series of exercises, scenario-building. So it is possible that it can take place so quickly," he says. This operation could be set in motion after the West African presidents report back. Their decision will have to be endorsed by the region, then the African Union and might have to be referred to the UN in New York. But at least in principle, troops could soon be on the way to ensure that the democratic voice of the Ivorian people is respected. There are already an estimated 10,000 UN troops in the country, but their mandate has been to monitor the peace process and support the organisation of November's election. The international community would probably help with logistics Unlike the possible West African intervention force, its mandate does not include enforcing the results of the poll. Mr Boshoff says that an obstacle in the way of a West African force could be the number of the region's troops already deployed in other peacekeeping missions. The other problems to be overcome are logistics - the ability to get the troops to where they are needed - and the money needed to pay for them. But Mr Boshoff says here at least the international community would probably be willing to lend a hand. "If West Africa makes a decision, we can expect that there will be some international support in terms of logistical support and finance, because without it the region will struggle to find the resources that it needs." West Africa is not the only region that has African troops deployed on its soil. In March 2008 an African Union force helped recapture the island of Anjouan in the Comoros, after a year-long rebellion. It is African Union troops that keep the Somali government in power and African peacekeepers are working alongside UN troops in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Pope calls for end to conflicts
Pope Benedict called for Israelis and Palestinians "to strive for a just and peaceful co-existence"Related stories Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his hope for an end to conflicts around the world, in his traditional Christmas Day message from the Vatican. In his address from St Peter's Basilica, he called on Israelis and Palestinians to co-exist in peace. He urged China's Christians to remain hopeful in spite of limitations, and prayed for those hit by natural disasters in Latin America. He also appealed for peace in Somalia, Darfur and Ivory Coast. An estimated 100,000 people had gathered in the square outside St Peter's - wet from rain - to hear the Urbi et Orbi - meaning to the city (Rome) and to the world -sermon. AnalysisPope Benedict said the Christmas message of peace and hope was always new, surprising and daring. It should spur everyone towards a peaceful struggle for justice. He dived straight into a list of the world's main trouble spots, singling out the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East and China. In the Middle East, the Vatican fears further attacks like the one on a Catholic cathedral in Baghdad in October that killed 52 people. In China, Communist authorities have been forcing Catholic Bishops to attend events organised by the state-backed "patriotic church" which does not recognise the Pope's authority. Relations between the Vatican and China - they broke formal diplomatic ties half a century ago - have recently reached their lowest point in years. Pope Benedict's message this Christmas is a good illustration of how the formerly Eurocentric Church is focussing increasingly on the problems of the global South. "May the light of Christmas shine forth anew in the Land where Jesus was born, and inspire Israelis and Palestinians to strive for a just and peaceful co-existence," Benedict told the crowd. He urged Roman Catholics in China to face with courage the limits on their freedom. He also called for political leaders to show solidarity with Christians throughout the Middle East, saying that those living in Iraq faced persecution. "May the comforting message of the coming of Emmanuel ease the pain and bring consolation amid their trials to the beloved Christian communities in Iraq and throughout the Middle East," he said. The Pope called for "lasting peace and authentic progress" for Somalia, Darfur and Ivory Coast as well as political and social stability in Madagascar. He also urged greater respect for human rights in Afghanistan and Pakistan and called for reconciliation between North and South Korea. The Pope offered consolation to those in Haiti suffering in the aftermath of January's earthquake and the recent cholera epidemic. He also mentioned the victims of natural disasters in Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala and Costa Rica. In keeping with tradition, the Pope then delivered Christmas greetings in 65 languages. In pictures: Christmas Day around the world After the sermon, Benedict was to host a Christmas lunch in the Vatican's audience hall for 350 homeless people. Earlier, there was tight security at Mass on Christmas Eve, as the Pope walked in procession up the central nave of the basilica, followed by plain-clothed security men. The 83-year-old pontiff stopped twice to bless babies held up by worshippers among the 10,000-strong crowd. The Vatican had reviewed its security procedures after a woman lunged at him at the previous year's event, causing him to stumble. Security fears have also been heightened by parcel bomb attacks on Thursday at two embassies in Rome which injured two people. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Blog Me, Tweet Me?Dell OEM?s Inaugural Blogger Day
On Tuesday, December 14, Dell OEM Solutions hosted its first Blogger Day for eight technology bloggers from all over the globe at the Westin Domain near Dell’s Round Rock campus.
The theme of the day was “A Day in the Life of an OEM Solution” and the bloggers were given the inside scoop on OEM Solutions, our technology and our customization services before touring Dell’s customization facility and executive briefing.
Bloggers who made the trip were:
• Brad Butner (Seattle) from TechVirtuoso
• Andrew Lyle (Toronto) from Neowin
• John Obeto (Colorado) from Absolutely Windows
• Devang Panchigar (New Jersey) from Storage Nerve
• Jeffery Powers (Wisconsin) from Geekazine
• Hector Jose Russo (Dallas) from Geeks Room
• Sandro Villinger (Germany) from Geeks Room, PC Praxis and Computer Bild
And now presenting…
Franklin Flint and Josh Neland, Dell OEM Solutions Global Technology Evangelists, kicked off the day laying the groundwork and providing an overview of the group. There were multiple “aha” moments among the bloggers (and some great questions) as they realized just how different OEM Solutions is from Dell’s Large Enterprise (IT) group.
Aptly dubbed the “Orange County Choppers” of the technology world by Neland, Dell OEM Solutions is Dell’s “custom shop” from branding a bezel to removing the chassis hood for major tech tweaks.
The dynamic duo also gave some great examples of unexpected places Dell OEM’s technology lives and some of the end-user solutions powered by Dell’s customized hardware included: airport baggage screening, automated toll booths, self-service kiosks and digital displays.
Next up was Deryl Browning from our product group who gave a detailed overview of the different types of customization offered by Dell OEM Solutions including OEM Ready; standard customization and non-standard customization.
Zac Cravens, Non-Standard Customization Lead, provided great insight into the customization the team did on a Dell Precision T7500 for a healthcare customer.
Twitter was abuzz as the bloggers went from curious about the workstation to gushing about its, well, guts: “16TB, 2x Telsa (250?) GPU’s, 24GB of RAM, custom cabling, SSD, 1100 Watt PSU”
Bloggers surrounded Cravens well into the lunch hour, looking more closely at the workstation the brought, taking pictures and asking more questions.
After lunch, Donnie Gerhart, Software and BIOS customization engineer, talked about the unique needs of OEM customers such as customizing BIOS splash screens so the customer’s logo is shown and not Dell’s.
Finally, Shawn Hammer and Tom Holt, both mechanical engineers, showed off some great (and colorful) examples of custom bezel design work they’ve done and talked at length about how they work directly with customers to provide design options that make sense from an engineering standpoint (i.e. no vent-free bezels). Though the most talked-about example of standard customization is always the Google Wave appliance, there are multiple options and levels of design complexity.
By the numbers…
So far, there have been 235 Tweets, 25 pictures and 5 blog posts about the event. Some of the highlights include:
johnobeto: Google Search Appliance is a pretty good use case for Dell OEM. Dell provides fulfillment, customer service & support #delloemday
rickvanover: @johnobeto I’ve used a number of the OEM solutions from Dell. They pop up in a lot of places. The best driver was global support #delloemday
kevin_houston: “For your Dell server rebranding needs, call Holt and Hammer!” #DellOEMDay
We’ll continue to engage with the bloggers in the coming weeks/months and will share coverage and new posts as we get them. In the meantime, if you work with Dell OEM and would like to talk to our bloggers to increase your visibility, feel free to contact me atKaren_Siuda@dellteam.com.cell spy mobile spy spy text messages Sources......

Shipping issues
So I ordered a 42" Plasma TV at a great price on 3/1. When I fished ordering it said the estimated delivery date would be today 3/5. Obviously I was thrilled with the speed but not convinced. The order shows even still that the tracking and carrier data are unavailable. This made me nervous but I read on the dell site that it could take 3 days for the tracking # to be updated and if I haven't received an Email saying it was delayed I should be fine. So what the heck I'll take today off work so I don't miss it. By 2pm I'm getting worried so I call customer service. They couldn't even tell me what carrier had it. She told me she would report it and I could expect a response in 48 hours. "So it is for sure not coming today right?" I said. "Well the delivery date is the 5th so it should." At that point I knew she had pretty much the exact info I have and either didn't have the ability or desire to help me further. It is now after 5pm and I am wishing I had stuck with my instinct to assume it wouldn't actually get here when they indicated. Even if by some miracle it actually shows up today I'm not terribly impressed all the way around.cell phone spy software

From Silk Cocoon to Medical Miracle (preview)
For a millennium, traders brought silk fabrics from the Far East along the Silk Road to Europe, where the beautiful yet tough material was fashioned into dazzling clothes. Today bioengineers are infusing the natural protein fibers spun by silkworms with enzymes and semiconductors. They are processing the modified strands under varying temperature, shear and acidic conditions to create novel materials with remarkable properties.Physicians like silk sutures because they are strong and compatible with human tissue, meaning the body’s immune system doesn’t reject them. Our laboratory at Tufts University has recently extended those traits to make thin tubes that can be used as grafts to replace sections of clogged arteries, which could eliminate the need to extract a vein for that purpose from a patient’s leg for a coronary bypass, the usual procedure. James Goh and his colleagues at the National University of Singapore have regenerated an anterior cruciate ligament in a live pig’s knee using stem cells implanted in silk scaffolding. [More]

New Year's Eve is about to get a lot funnier now that "Jersey Shore" star Vinny will be taking a comedic stab at one of 2010's most memorable commercials. MTV's New Year's Eve special will include a first look at Vinny's Old Spice spoof.
"MTV's New Year's Bash 2011 will provide a comedic look back at the past year," Shawn Witt, executive producer of MTV's "New Year's Bash 2011," explained, adding, "Vinny's Old Spice commercial parody is just one of the many satirical pieces we will feature throughout the show."
MTV viewers will also get to watch "Jersey Shore" star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi as she is lowered in a ball to MTV's rooftop deck to help ring in 2011 at the MTV New Year's Bash.
"MTV is looking to redefine the concept of the traditional New Year's Eve broadcast," Steve Tseckares, MTV's Senior Vice President of Special Programming and Production, said in a statement. "This year's show will push boundaries and provide fans with a diversified content experience that fuses comedy, music and pop culture."
Of course, the sassy "Shore" star won't be alone, as comedian Whitney Cummings will host the proceedings, rapper Flo Rida will perform and another "Jersey Shore" castmember, Pauly D, will serve as the night's DJ. It's all in the name of fun, as the special will take an irreverent look back at the year in music, television, Internet, relationships and more.
"I can't wait to host MTV's New Years Eve Bash!" Cummings said. "It's going to be so fun to party with the 'Jersey Shore' [cast] and rip on all things 2010. I'm gonna get some really good tweets."
Cummings and her crew will be joined by "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Bobby Moynihan, comedian Nick Kroll, Internet sensation Keenan Cahill and "Pretty Little Liars" castmembers Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell. The special will debut live on MTV and MTV2 from MTV's Times Square studio on December 31 at 10:30 p.m. ET (tape delay PT).
Of course, it wouldn't be a New Year's celebration without some serious fist-pumping, so the "Jersey Shore" castmembers will lead the crowd in a fist-pumping frenzy in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.
While Cummings will be hosting the show live from MTV's Times Square studio, the hosts of "The Seven," Kevin Manno and Julie Alexandria, will be reporting on the festivities down at street level, and the "Shore" kids will make sure to keep the crowd hyped.
As if that weren't enough, the "Jersey Shore" gang will also unveil an exclusive sneak preview of the new season of the big show.

Haiti mobs lynch voodoo priests
There have been calls for better public health information throughout the epidemic Voodoo priests in Haiti are being lynched by mobs who blame them for spreading cholera, the country's government has said. At least 45 people have been lynched in recent weeks as Haiti continues to be ravaged by a cholera epidemic. Haiti's communications minister has made an appeal for the lynchings to end and called for a campaign to ensure people understand how cholera spreads. More than 2,500 Haitians have died from the water-borne disease since October. Another 121,000 people have been treated for symptoms of cholera, with at least 63,500 admitted to hospital, figures show. The outbreak has also prompted angry protests aimed at the United Nations, whose Nepalese peacekeepers have been suspected of introducing cholera to Haiti. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced an investigation into the reports, although the UN initially denied the suggestion.Although many Haitians still practise voodoo or use aspects of voodoo in their religious worship, the latest violence erupted out of fears the traditional priests were using their powers to spread the infection. “People have been blaming us, saying that we cast spells and did evil things which brought the earthquake as a punishment”Max Beauvoir Voodoo priest Officials counted 40 people killed - mostly voodoo priests - killed in one region of Haiti, the AFP news agency reported, with five others killed elsewhere. "The victims... were stoned or hacked with machetes before being burned in the streets," communications ministry official Moise Fritz Evens said. Haiti's communications minister said she abhorred the killings and insisted that the answer was to improve general education about how cholera is transmitted. "Voodoo practitioners have nothing to do with the cholera epidemic. We must press for an awareness campaign about the disease in the communities." A highly prominent voodoo leader, Max Beauvoir, told Reuters news agency police were not doing enough to stop the violence. "Since the earthquake some people have been blaming us, saying that we cast spells and did evil things which brought the earthquake as a punishment," he said. Haiti's cholera epidemic has provoked widespread fear across the country. Anger spread when suspicions emerged that the Nepalese UN peacekeepers could have brought the disease to Haiti - where it is extremely rare - from their country, where it is endemic. Poor sanitary conditions in much of quake-hit Haiti have contributed to the rapid spread of cholera, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can kill quickly but is treated easily through rehydration and antibiotics. The country was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in January 2010 that devastated most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed at least 250,000 people. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

W African bloc threatens Gbagbo
Mr Gbagbo now seems boxed in on all sides The West African regional bloc Ecowas has told incumbent Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo to stand down or expect to face "legitimate force". The statement came at the end of emergency talks on the crisis sparked by a disputed election last month. Ecowas and other international bodies have recognised Mr Gbagbo's rival Alassane Ouattara as the winner. The Ivory Coast's Constitutional Council says Mr Gbagbo was elected, citing vote-rigging in some areas. The election was meant to unite the country after a civil war in 2002 split the world's largest cocoa producer in two. Ecowas said after its summit in Abuja, Nigeria, that it would send an envoy to the country to meet Mr Gbagbo. It would also convene a meeting of defence ministers to plan military action if he refused to back down, it said. The BBC's Thomas Fessy in the main city Abidjan says the pressure from Ecowas has not come as a surprise, and means that Mr Gbagbo is now definitely boxed in on all sides. On Thursday state television, one of the key elements keeping him in power, was taken off the air in areas outside Abidjan. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Raja and Kalmadi face detectives
A Raja quit last month amid what has been described as India's biggest corruption investigation Related stories Indian police have begun questioning former Telecommunications Minister A Raja over an alleged multi-billion dollar corruption scandal. Mr Raja was forced to quit last month over the sale of mobile telephone licences for a fraction of their value. Police have also raided the homes of Commonwealth Games organiser Suresh Kalmadi in a separate corruption case. On Wednesday thousands of people rallied in Delhi against alleged abuse involving the ruling Congress party. Further rallies are planned across the country in the coming weeks. Investigators are looking into why so-called 2G spectrum phone licences were sold in 2008 for a fraction of their value, costing the government $37bn (£23bn) in lost revenue, according to the national auditor. Mr Raja, who denies any wrongdoing, was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday. He is a member of the DMK party, an important member of the Congress-led ruling coalition. The 2G spectrum scandal has prompted the most serious political stand-off in recent times in India. The winter session of parliament ended this month in deadlock, as the government rejected opposition demands for a top-level inquiry. Earlier this week, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told a Congress party conference he had nothing to hide, and was happy to face a parliamentary panel over the 2G inquiry. Suresh Kalmadi adopted a defiant tone outside his home after the police search Congress party president Sonia Gandhi told the same conference that corruption was a disease in India, as she unveiled a five-point action plan to tackle the problem. Mr Singh has been accused of reacting slowly to the 2G scandal, which is described as the country's biggest ever corruption investigation. Another high-profile inquiry is continuing into claims that organisers of the Delhi Commonwealth Games swindled millions of dollars from the October event. On Friday, the CBI searched Games chief organiser Suresh Kalmadi's homes in the capital, Delhi, and in the western town of Pune, and the home of his personal secretary. After police finished their search, Mr Kalmadi told journalists outside his Delhi home he was innocent until proven guilty. "I am ready for any investigation on any issue," he said, reports AFP news agency. "I am not running away." Three other senior officials from the Games organising committee, including its sacked treasurer, were arrested last month. They are accused of forgery and cheating over the awarding of contracts before October's event. The Central Vigilance Commission, a national watchdog, has received complaints that up to $1.8bn (£1.1bn) of Games money was misappropriated. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

'I don't think he would ever do it, but he's genius,' she tells MTV News.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

We know that Gwyneth Paltrow has the singing chops to portray a down-on-her-luck Nashville star in "Country Strong." But what MTV News didn't know was whether her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, has what it takes to venture into the world of acting.
So we went straight to Paltrow and asked: Does Martin have acting skills as stellar as her singing talents?
"Definitely," Paltrow said of Martin's acting potential. "I don't think he would ever do it, but he's genius. Did you ever see him in 'Extras'?" Paltrow offered as proof. In his episode of the short-lived Ricky Gervais show, Martin guest-starred as an arrogant, exaggeratedly self-absorbed version of himself who tries to sneak a mention of a new Coldplay album into a public-service announcement about the need for clean drinking water.
Well, if Martin won't consider acting, might Paltrow consider doing a cover of a Coldplay song?
"Me? God no," Paltrow said. "No. We just can't, like, merge. His career is there and mine is there."
Don't count Paltrow out of the singing game yet, however. She did put some thought into what type of music she'd sing on an album of her own.
"I think if I was going to make a country record, it would be, like, a super-bare, kind of stripped-back kind of country," Paltrow explained. "Like a little bit of bluegrass-influenced kind of thing."
But Paltrow said she wouldn't necessarily limit herself to one genre, saying she really loved singing Cee Lo's "Forget You" on "Glee." "I also love singing '40s standards and stuff like that," she added.
Go for it, Gwyneth! And get your hubby to do some more acting while you're at it.

County Participating in "Sustainable Valley" to Create Family Wage Jobs
In a continuing effort to proactively boost economic development in Southern Oregon, Jackson County Government has been working with a growing network of Rogue Valley business and community leaders on a strategic initiative named "Sustainable Valley," designed to seize the economic development opportunities created by the challenges of sustainability. The program is designed to create important, sustainable family wage traded-sector jobs to make Jackson County's economy more resilient for the benefit of the entire Southern Oregon community.
Working closely with established economic development organizations, Sustainable Valley has identified an opportunity to develop a Sustainable Valley Business Accelerator designed to help innovative, sustainable technology startup companies grow and succeed. Its goal is to accomplish this by providing hands-on support, helping get start-ups ?investment ready,? connecting companies to interested investors, and strengthen the branding of Southern Oregon as an attractive place for all manner of sustainable businesses to launch and grow.
Jackson County Government is proposing an investment of $50,000 toward an initial six-month budget of $180,000 in order to yield the following deliverables:
Legal incorporation of Sustainable Valley as a nonprofit organization.
Selection of an initial site for the Sustainable Valley Accelerator and formal launch of the Accelerator.
Production of a more detailed three-year business and financial plan.
Securing of initial startup funding or funding commitments of at least $500,000 for operations and investment purposes. These funds will come from a mix of local, state, federal and private funding sources.
Jackson County and Southern Oregon have proven to be a good home for sustainable product and technology businesses including Amy's Kitchen, Barefoot Motors, Brammo, Upwind Solutions, Sky Research, MotorcycleUSA, Rogue Valley Micro Devices, Plexis Healthcare Systems and many others. Among the reasons these companies have been successful are a central location between the metro areas of Seattle/Portland and the San Francisco Bay Area with ideal logistics on the I-5 corridor, an available and technically educated workforce, access to existing supply chain, quality institutions of higher learning for partnering opportunities, cultural resources, quality of life, a low cost of doing business, and an airport for handling future growth.
"The success of the Accelerator and broader Sustainable Valley vision will diversify our economic base which provides for less volatility and enables better planning for community, government, and education. The success of this initiative will provide our region with a more recognized brand name," said Danny Jordan, Jackson County Administrator.
Mark VonHolle, VP of S&B James Construction Management, SOREDI Board President and The Chamber of Medford/Jackson County Board Member, who initiated the ?Sustainable Valley? economic development initiative, stated: ?The last of 40 sawmills in this region closed in 2009, and the loss of those good family wage traded sector jobs has led Jackson County to be in the bottom three percent for the lowest wages in the U.S. for counties with populations of 75,000 or higher. In addition, the Mail Tribune recently reported nearly one in four citizens in Jackson and Josephine counties are now on food assistance. This is totally unacceptable. We can and must do better!?
"As Sustainability is the new environmental, social, technologic and economic reality of our times, rebranding our region as 'Sustainable Valley' is an idea whose time has come. We can't compromise our airshed and we won't allow the values and culture to be compromised that make Southern Oregon such a great place to live, raise a family and do business. This is a strategic initiative to create meaningful, sustainable, technology-based family wage jobs in order to make our economy more resilient and our community more prosperous," said Dave Gilmour, Jackson County Commissioner.
"This developing strategy has the power to transform our regional economy and provide a pro-active solution to many of the corresponding economic challenges our community and state are facing. The economic multiplier associated with a strong foundation of family wage traded-sector jobs will provide increased opportunities and benefits for all of the other businesses in our community," said Jack Walker, Jackson County Commissioner.
"Creative business leadership will be required to accomplish more efficient use of energy, water and materials, 'green' building products, transportation systems and more sustainably grown food. Companies that provide this leadership can do very well and create excellent jobs for our community. We want to make sure some of those companies are rooted right here," said Dennis C.W. Smith, Jackson County Commissioner.
Sustainable Valley is a public-private partnership to help the local region seize opportunities created by sustainability. The volunteer advisory committee includes business and community leaders. The group plans to organize as a nonprofit charity and establish a for profit Sustainable Valley Business Accelerator to help get targeted companies ready for investment and growth. Business Oregon, The City of Medford, Asante Health System, Lithia Motors and Medford Fabrication are also investing in this initiative with Jackson County.

Hero's welcome?
Russia's spies were whisked away from a Moscow airport In the bad old days, homecoming spies could expect heroes' welcomes in Moscow, their faces on commemorative postage stamps and lifelong adulation. But that, of course, was when they were fighting evil empires, rather than living the suburban American dream. Today's returning spies seem to have done little hard work - or at least little work for the Russian state. The glamorous Anna Chapman, for example, appears to have spent more time flogging private planes to Russian oligarchs. But they have all been offered a Moscow flat and a $2,000 (£1,327) state pension - the sort of riches plenty of Muscovites can still only dream of.The Russian press are treating the entire episode with a mixture of humour and disdain. Our Man in Havana, James Wormold, passed off mundane details as secrets One commenter observed: "It reminds me of Graham Greene's Our Man in Havana where the spy convinces his Centre that a diagram of a vacuum cleaner is the blueprint for a new secret weapon." The radio station Ekho Moskvy has announced a cartoon contest on the topic of the returning spies. But there are plenty of Russians who say the spies "just weren't up to the job". With the exception of the redheaded Anna Chapman, who will doubtless soon be offered a talk show and a column on a British tabloid, they do look like a dull lot compared to their Soviet forerunners - who were very good indeed at their jobs. EAST-WEST PRISONER SWAPS1962: KGB Colonel Rudolf Abel freed by US in exchange for Gary Powers, pilot of a U-2 spy plane shot down over the USSR in 19601964: Gordon Lonsdale, real name Konon Molody, member of the Portland spy ring, is returned to the USSR1969: UK frees Soviet agents Peter and Helen Kroger for Gerald Brooke, jailed for spying in USSR1981: Guenter Guillaume, agent for East Germany's Stasi, exchanged for Western agents1986: Soviet dissident Anatoly Sharansky and three Western agents swapped for KGB husband-and-wife spies Karl and Hana Koecher and two other agentsUS and Russia in airport spy swap Who is on the 'spy-swap' list? The old Soviet-era spies tended to be a cheerful lot, full of joie de vivre - it is perhaps their capacity for jollity that made them successful. Mikhail Lyubimov, who spied in London in the 1980s, once told me that former spies should form an international association aimed at promoting international understanding. "With our experience, we are by far the best equipped to work towards bettering understandings between nations," he said, only semi-seriously. A former colleague, who was kicked out of Japan for spying, went on to have a successful career writing books that opened Japanese culture to Russian readers.Nevertheless, it cannot be easy to come home after years of exile. Russia has changed a lot in the last 10 years: the rouble rate is confusing, cars are different, the metro works in a different way, attitudes have changed. Soviet spy Gordon Lonsdale, otherwise known as Konon Molody And let us not forget that these spies have, between them, eight children who were born in the US. Since their parents were pretending not to be Russian, they probably do not even speak a word of the language. Although they will be allowed to settle in Russia, will they want to? Even in Soviet days, some found it difficult to cope with life after a spy swap. The Koechers, who returned to Czechoslovakia following a swap in the 1980s, never properly re-integrated, nor did the Russian spies the Krogers/Cohens, who were flown to Moscow in 1969. Despite being awarded a dacha and numerous state honours, they never recovered emotionally and lived isolated lives, refusing even to learn Russian. Gordon Lonsdale/Konon Molody, swapped during the Cold War, suffered from depression after his return to the Soviet Union and died mysteriously during a mushroom-picking expedition. The manner of this latest swap had all the fun of the Cold War - you could almost hear the opening strains of the Third Man, watching the aeroplane ballet on the Vienna tarmac. But although the spies will not be paupers, their lives may not be easy. New S Korea drills test tension
North Korean soldiers hold exercises amid large-scale South Korean drills South Korea has said it will hold new large-scale military drills involving ground and air live fire on Thursday. Artillery, jets and about 800 soldiers will take part, the government said, alongside separate naval exercises that began on Wednesday. Tension has been high since North Korea shelled the South's Yeonpyeong island last month, killing four South Koreans. Drills by the South on Monday near Yeonpyeong sparked Northern threats of retaliation that did not materialise. An army spokesman said Thursday's drill would be held at Pocheon, 20km (12 miles) south of the border - about 50km from central Seoul. Exercises have been held at Pocheon before, but this would be on an unprecedented scale, the spokesman said. "The scale of mechanised assets taking place is enormous. When we would normally have 6 K-9 mechanised artillery, we'll have 36. "We'll have the F-15 jets firing. We'll have choppers. You can say most of the mechanised assets taking part will be firing live ammunition," the spokesman said. "We will retaliate thoroughly if the North commits another provocative act like the shelling of Yeonpyeong," First Armoured Battalion commander Choo Eun-sik told Yonhap news agency. "Through this exercise [at Pocheon], we will demonstrate our solid military preparedness," he said. The BBC's Kevin Kim in Seoul says this is the largest winter live-fire exercise ever conducted on land here. Separately, a "routine" four-day naval firing exercise has begun off the east coast of South Korea, involving six warships and helicopters. The North Korean shelling of Yeonpyeong shocked South Koreans. It sparked the replacement of the country's defence minister and the development of a more active defence and deterrence policy among South Korean planners. South Korea and the US - with which it has a long military relationship - had already been conducting large-scale military exercises, following the apparent torpedoing of a South Korean warship by the North on 26 March, which killed 46 south Korean sailors. The pace of military drills has been stepped up in recent weeks, despite frequent denunciations from North Korea and its closest ally China.Efforts to redirect the Korean issue back to the negotiating table have been unsuccessful. South Korea now patrols Yeonpyeong Island since it was shelled by the North in November China and the North say it is time to return to the six-nation talks about North Korea's nuclear programmes. But the US, South Korea and Japan have said they will not return to such talks, which have previously involved rewards for the North if it cuts back on nuclear development. After a visit to North Korea, the US politician, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, said North Korea agreed to let international monitors back into the country to inspect its nuclear sites. China has also urged the North to invite staff from the International Atomic Energy Agency but there has been no word from the North on the subject. "The six-party talks will be restarted again when the North Koreans display a willingness to change their behaviour," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. North Korea walked out of the six-party talks in April 2009 and expelled UN nuclear inspectors from the country. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Was Lady Gaga Groped By Little Monster In Paris?
Gaga poses for pictures in the streets of Paris after show cancellation, but one fan may have gotten fresh.By Jocelyn Vena

After canceling her show in Paris over the weekend due to stormy weather, Lady Gaga showed her little monsters some love on the streets of the City of Light. Gaga, dressed in a beige, low-cut Victorian-style gown and sporting a beehive and John Lennon-esque sunglasses, emerged on the streets of Paris on Monday to greet screaming fans.
The singer posed for pictures, and one fan even got close enough to touch the singer. In a series of photos, the fan, dressed in a white parka and beige knit hat, scarf and gloves, stopped the singer for a hug before accidentally touching Gaga's breast. The grope took place as the singer was walking away from the encounter.
Gaga has been abroad for a slew of dates on her never-ending Monster Ball Tour. She joined Semi Precious Weapons onstage for one of their club gigs in London. She even gave a sneak preview of her forthcoming Born This Way album, which is set for release in early 2011.
"Want to hear 'You and I'? This one is going to be on Born This Way. It's one of my favorites. The album doesn't have a bunch of rock ballads or anything, but this is one of them," she told the crowd at a show in London.
"Now, I don't know if you know this, but for those of you who don't know, I write all my own music. Every single lyric, melody and note was created by me. I am not manufactured. I'm a bad cat and coming for you 'cause I believe in you and I. It's not that I don't like to be humble, it's just that pop music has a pretty bad rap," Gaga explained.

Lady Gaga, allegedly getting groped by a fan in Paris on Monday
Photo: ANG/Fame Pictures

Matt Damon's 'True Grit' Character Has No Beef With Shia LaBeouf
The man behind Texas goofball LaBoeuf also had a hand in LaBeouf's career -- coincidence?By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Matt Damon
Photo: MTV News
In "True Grit," the upcoming and much-buzzed about western from the Coen brothers, Matt Damon gets a chance to showcase his playful, comedic side via his character, LaBoeuf, pronounced "La Beef."
Given the familiar-ish spelling of the character's name and Damon's history in working with actor Shia LaBeouf — one of his first non-child-actor roles was in "The Battle of Shaker Heights, the feature film made from Damon and Ben Affleck's "Project Greenlight" series for HBO — we jokingly asked him if the goofball Texas ranger LaBoeuf in "True Grit," bears any resemblance or relation to "Transformers" star LaBeouf (pronounced "La Buff").
"Not unless he's changing his pronunciation to 'Le Beef,' " Damon joked back. "I thought it was pronounced 'La Buff' when I first saw it, but the book is very clear it's pronounced 'Le Beef.' "
Fair enough. Speaking of LaBeouf (which really does mean "the beef" in French), we wondered if Damon feels responsible for any of the blockbuster success the star has achieved thus far in his career.
"I wish I could take responsibility for his career," Damon said of Shia, who actually got his start on the Disney Channel's "Even Stevens." "He's had a terrific career and he's a terrific actor. We thought that when we saw him on 'Project Greenlight.' We thought, 'Wow, who is this kid?' I'm very happy to see everything that's happened to him; he's a terrific guy."
Perhaps there is a Damon/LaBeouf project in the future? Or better yet, a LaBeouf/LaBoeuf "Funny or Die" video/parody?
Check out everything we've got on "True Grit."

Scotland 'pressured over Megrahi'
A US Congressional inquiry into the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbasset al-Megrahi says there was strong political pressure on the Scottish government to free him. It also casts doubt on the competence of the doctors who examined Megrahi. "Commercial and economic considerations trumped... our global fight against terrorism," said Senator Bob Menendez. The report comes on the 22nd anniversary of the bombing, in which 270 people died. The Scottish government released Megrahi in August 2009 on compassionate grounds because he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. He returned to Libya and is still alive. Senator Menendez undertook the investigation after officials from the Scotland, the UK and BP failed to testify at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

In 60 Sec.: Mercedes-Benz 75 HP
The Mercedes 75 HP is a super sports car from a time when speeds of over 300 km/h were dismissed as fully unrealistic. Its 75 HP and maximum speed of 95 km/h would nowadays not normally be associated with a super sports car. But over a hundred years ago, a time without asphalted streets and without a comprehensive network of gas stations, the first Mercedes 6 cylinder was among the sportiest vehicles in the world.Sources......

'Family Guy' Exclusive: Nine Minutes Of 'Star Wars' Parody 'It's A Trap!'
'It's definitely the most visually stunning of all of the ones we've done,' creator Seth MacFarlane tells MTV News.By Eric Ditzian
Brian, Peter and Lois Griffin in "Family Guy: It's A Trap!"
Photo: Fox
Back at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane showed off a first-look at "It's a Trap!," the final installment in the animated series' parodies of the "Star Wars" franchise. But unless you were lucky enough to be sitting in those hallowed, geek-filled halls, you've barely seen anything from the hour-long episode, which tweaks "Return of the Jedi" to hilarious effect.
That's why MTV News is happy to present nine minutes from "It's a Trap," which hits DVD and Blu-ray Tuesday. "It's more of exactly the same kind of jokes you've seen in the other two," MacFarlane deadpanned in a Comic-Con chat with us. "So if you like those, this is the same and you'll enjoy it just as much."
That's just a bit of an understatement, but it's also true: The third episode is no letdown from the first two. Once again, young Chris Griffin plays Luke Skywalker. He's joined by Peter as Han Solo, Lois as Princess Leia, Brian as Chewbacca, Stewie as Darth Vader and all manner of other "Family Guy" characters in various roles. (Paraplegic Joe as Jabba the Hut? Well played!)
"It's a Trap!" begins exactly as the episodes that preceded it, with a LOL-tastic take on the "Star Wars" franchise's iconic opening crawl: "Luke Skywalker has returned to his home planet of Tatooine in order to — okay, you know what, we don't care. We were thinking of not even doing this one. Fox made us do it ... I'm sorry. I took a muscle relaxer earlier and it's kicking in."
From there it's off to the Death Star. We see Solo getting a fart-filled release from his carbonite prison, Meg Griffin as the multi-tentacled sarlacc beast, a Stormtrooper bicycle chase, and appearances from "American Dad!" characters Roger the alien and Klaus the fish in "Jedi" character. Random cameos include Pee-wee Herman, Ted Knight ripped from "Caddyshack" footage and the boogie-woogie piano stylings of Ray Charles. The whole production has never looked better. As MacFarlane explained, "It's definitely the most visually stunning of all of the ones we've done."
Just don't expect the "Family Guy" guys to attack the three newest "Star Wars" flicks. Says MacFarlane, "I would rather chew broken glass."

Section of Ross Lane Closed to Through Traffic Beginning April 15
Beginning Thursday, April 15, major road improvements will close Ross Lane North (between McAndrews and Rossanley) to through traffic in order to upgrade and widen the road, increase safety, and improve congestion and air quality. Road construction will take place April 12 through November 30, 2011, and during that period access along that section of Ross Lane will be open to residents of the neighborhood with possible delays. A detour route will be in place, and motorists are asked to avoid Ross Lane North during construction.
?Limiting traffic to local residential trips only allows the contractor to maximize their efficiency and complete the project faster,? said John Vial, Director of Jackson County Roads.
The project will widen and improve the road to include three traffic lanes, including one lane in each direction and a continuous center turn lane. Other upgrades to the road will be bicycle lanes on both sides of the road, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, underground drainage, and a water main upgrade by the Medford Water Commission. A stoplight will also be added at the McAndrews and Ross Lane intersection which will cut congestion and improve air quality with fewer cars idling while waiting to get through the intersection.
?This project will do much to improve safety and congestion on this vital north-south route,? noted Vial.
When the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) created the nearby overpass system, the Ross Lane area experienced increased traffic volume. Ross Lane was never designed to safely handle the amount of traffic it currently experiences. The road was originally designed as a rural residential road, and it is now being redesigned for urban status.
Construction will be daytime work only, and motorists may experience delays of up to 20 minutes on Ross Lane North between Rossanley and McAndrews. Detour routes will utilize Rossanley, Sage and McAndrews Roads.
During construction, the intersection controls of McAndrews and Ross Lane will be changed to benefit traffic following the detour. The following are instructions for motorists:
If you are travelling west on McAndrews toward Jacksonville, you will be able to make a left or right turn on Ross Lane or go straight without stopping.
If you are travelling north on Ross Lane turning right on McAndrews, you will need to yield. Going straight or turning left on McAndrews you will need to stop.
If you are travelling south on Ross Lane, you will need to stop at McAndrews before proceeding.
If you are travelling east on McAndrews, you will need to stop at Ross Lane before proceeding.
During the course of the project, the public can contact James Philp with any questions at rosslane@jacksoncounty.org. Information will also be posted and updated on the Jackson County website at www.jacksoncounty.org/rosslane.
For more information, please contact: James Philp, Project Engineer, Jackson County Roads, at (541) 774-8184. Iran cuts fuel and food subsidies
Car drivers in Iran began queuing for petrol as soon as the cuts were announced Iran has cut energy and food subsidies, risking a repeat of angry protests which followed fuel rationing in 2007. The cuts, introduced on Sunday, mean a four-fold rise in the price of petrol and reduced subsidies for bread. Each car will get 60 litres of fuel per month at a subsidised price of 40 cents per litre, up from 10 cents per litre. Iran, whose fragile economy has been hit by United Nations' sanctions, has said it pays about $100bn (£64bn) in subsidies annually. In 2007, protesters set alight dozens of petrol stations after the system of fuel rationing was introduced. News agency reports on Sunday said that there was a heavy policy presence in the capital Tehran, but there were no reports of trouble. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that the cuts in subsidies were the "biggest surgery" to the economy in 50 years. Mr Ahmadinejad also said his government was paying $4bn in bread subsidies, which are being gradually phased out.Iran's oil-based economy is been hit by four rounds of UN sanctions, as well as those from individual countries over its controversial nuclear programme. The government says that under its Subsidy Smart Plan, money from increased prices will be returned to the people through cash payments. But some economists fear the increased prices, which also apply to electricity, water, and flour, will fuel inflation, already thought to be running at 20%.This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
