Fighting the Taliban is not enough to secure Afghanistan, MPs say Evidence suggests that the present highly intensive counter-insurgency campaign in Afghanistan is not succeeding, MPs say. A Commons foreign affairs committee report said it could derail efforts to secure a solution to what is essentially a political problem. It says the US must step up efforts to hold talks with the Taliban if a political resolution is to be reached. The foreign secretary agreed it was time to advance a political process. The report also suggests the British government's stated purpose for having troops in Afghanistan - to protect UK national security - may have been achieved "some time ago" because al-Qaeda's strength in the country appeared limited. But there were also a "number of risks" in the UK's aim of withdrawing combat troops by 2015, it added. David Cameron has promised to be an "all-weather friend" to Afghanistan. The prime minister said on Tuesday that the country had a "strong" relationship with the UK and that change would involve a "political process". The government has said it wants British combat troops to leave Afghanistan by 2015 and, last month, Defence Secretary Liam Fox suggested some of the 10,000 personnel could come home this year if "conditions on the ground" were suitable. But Conservative MP Richard Ottaway, the committee's chairman, said: "There is a danger that, without political leadership, the current military campaign is in danger of inadvertently derailing efforts to secure a political solution to what is essentially a political problem. “We question the government's logic that a full-scale counter insurgency campaign aimed at the Taliban is necessary to prevent al-Qaeda returning”House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee "The US should not delay its significant involvement in talks with the Taliban leadership because, without US support in this respect, there can be no longer-term peace in Afghanistan." He added: "We question the fundamental assumption that success in Afghanistan can be 'bought' through a strategy of 'clear, hold and build'. "The distinction between al-Qaeda and the Taliban, which is so often overlooked or confused in current debates, is crucial to generating appropriate policy responses in Afghanistan. "We question the government's logic that a full-scale counter insurgency campaign aimed at the Taliban is necessary to prevent al-Qaeda returning or that it could ever succeed." The "security rationale" behind the 2015 deadline for withdrawing combat troops was also not clear, and the policy had "a number of potential risks", according to the MPs' report. Mr Ottaway said: "Her Majesty's Armed Forces have our full support in tackling the challenges before them and their efforts are rightly described in so many instances as heroic. "It is our hope that this report will be received in the constructively critical manner in which it is intended, and regarded as a contribution to the wider debate which is taking place on how to improve a situation to which there are no easy solutions." Foreign Secretary William Hague said the government was building on military and civilian gains but agreed it was time to advance a political process. While they've never spoken publicly about dating one another, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez proudly had their relationship on display when they hit up the famous Vanity Fair Oscar party right after the 83rd Academy Awards telecast wrapped.
The pair didn't do press on the red carpet, but they looked relaxed as they posed together for pictures. Bieber's arm was around Gomez's waist as they smiled for photos. She was wearing a red Grecian-style gown. Bieber was in an all-black tuxedo with a red pocket square, matching his date for the night. They took photos as a pair, but also individually. Inside the party, Bieber and Gomez posed for pictures with fellow teen star Hailee Steinfeld, held hands and looked at each other's phones while they texted inside the fete.
The glamorous party was attended by some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Gwyneth Paltrow, besties Taylor Swift and Emma Stone, couples like Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, as well as Oscar winner Natalie Portman and her beau, Benjamin Millepied. Among the other A-listers there were Jamie Foxx, Jake Gyllenhaal, 50 Cent, Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams and Jennifer Hudson, to name a few.
"Good luck to my friend Hailee Steinfeld tonight on the #oscars. young people going for theirs! also want Christian Bale to win. #TheFighter," Bieber tweeted early on Sunday, before adding this message about his fame: "im never gonna change ... i will always remember ... i will always be that kid from Stratford ... I will always be grateful."
For her part, Gomez simply tweeted, "Vanity Fair fun!" She included a photo of herself with Bieber, Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, and his date.

Lloyd Taps Lil Wayne, Andre 3000 For New Tune
The track, titled 'Miss That Pu---,' will appear on the Chicago R&B singer's upcoming album, King of Hearts.By Jayson Rodriguez

Five years ago, Lloyd scored a hit with "You," a swooning, midtempo track from his sophomore effort, Street Love, that featured Lil Wayne.
For the remix of that tune, the then-Murder Inc. Records artist (Ja Rule, Ashanti) recruited Nas and Outkast's Andre 3000, the latter of whom delivered a poetic verse reminding fans of his MC pedigree.
Now, it looks like Lloyd has locked down both Wayne and Andre again for a track called "Miss That Pu---" that will be featured on his forthcoming album, King of Hearts.
"I liked the way it used to be," the R&B singer told Vibe magazine about the theme of the racy tongue-in-cheek number, for which his guest rappers have yet to deliver their verses.
King of Hearts, which is due out April 19, will be Lloyd's first album since he signed a deal with Interscope Records.
Lloyd, who is working closely with producer Polow Da Don (Fergie, Usher, Keri Hilson) on the project, has gone on record saying that they are making music that's comparable to some of the greatest producer/singer combinations of all time.
"In my opinion, and this is a bold statement, but it's like Michael [Jackson] and Quincy [Jones], it's like Justin [Timberlake] and Timbaland, Usher and Jermaine [Dupri]," Lloyd told MTV News last year. "It's that consistency that you can only find from really finding the right chemistry with the right person. As an artist, I can speak for everyone when I say chemistry is a big, big part of success."
