Geoffrey Rush, left, and Colin Firth are hoping for Oscars glory The Academy Awards ceremony has begun in the US, where The King's Speech and The Social Network are going head to head for the best picture prize. The former, which has taken more than $230m (£142m) around the world, has the most nominations - 12 - including a best actor nod for Colin Firth. True Grit, Inception and Black Swan are also among the best picture contenders. James Franco and Anne Hathaway are hosting the 83rd Academy Awards, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Voting by the Academy's 5,755 members ended earlier this week. The King's Speech has been tipped by The Hollywood Reporter to win the top honour. According to the industry paper, Academy voters - who have an average age of 57 - are more likely to identify with its middle-aged heroes than The Social Network's youthful, fast-talking cast. Oscars in numbers5,755 - number of Oscar voters50 - number of Oscar statuettes created for this year's winners248 - number of films eligible for best picture this year700 - number of bleacher seats for fans on red carpet10 - number of shows held at the Kodak theatre3,300 - number of seats inside500 - length (in feet) of red carpet The latter film - about the creation of Facebook - has eight nominations in all, as does Christopher Nolan's sci-fi spectacular Inception. The Coen brothers' western True Grit has 10 nods. The best picture category nowadays contains 10 nominees, and this year's other contenders are The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3 and Winter's Bone. The King's Speech is riding high on a wave of success, having won seven awards at the Baftas and a slew of other prizes. In the best actor category Firth is up against Jeff Bridges for True Grit, Javier Bardem for Biutiful and Franco for 127 Hours. Jesse Eisenberg is also nominated for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Twenty-eight-year-old Anne Hathaway is the youngest host in Oscars history Golden Globe and Bafta winner Natalie Portman is the hot tip to receive the best actress prize for Black Swan. Yet she faces competition from Annette Bening, for The Kids Are All Right, and Nicole Kidman, for Rabbit Hole. Jennifer Lawrence is also nominated for Winter's Bone, while Michelle Williams is up for romantic drama Blue Valentine. Yet it is the battle for the supporting actress Oscar that looks set to be one of the closest races. The Fighter's Melissa Leo is considered to be favourite, though some have wondered if her decision to self-finance an advertising campaign promoting herself to voters might damage her chances. She will also face a strong challenge from her Fighter co-star Amy Adams and from Helena Bonham Carter, who plays the future Queen Mother in The King's Speech. Nor should one should rule out a surprise win for 14-year-old newcomer Hailee Steinfeld for her assured performance in True Grit. There is a lot of admiration too for Jacki Weaver, whose role in crime drama Animal Kingdom has made her the first Australian actress to be Oscar-nominated for an Australian film. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Hailee Steinfeld arrived on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night (February 27) a first-time nominee for her breakthrough performance in "True Grit" and could very well leave the evening as a Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner.
Check out photos of Hailee Steinfeld on the red carpet.
But even on her big night, fans are buzzing about her possible future projects, and one in particular. MTV News caught up with Steinfeld, who was wearing a Marchesa gown, on the carpet (she told us she felt, "so honored and so blessed to be here") and had to ask whether she was still in the running for the big-screen adaptation of "The Hunger Games," based on the popular young-adult novel.
Steinfeld has been one of the names in consideration for the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen. The young actress told us she has "a lot of projects that we're looking at at the moment," but she also confirmed that she has met with "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross.
"It's definitely something that we're taking one day at a time and making sure that everything is in place," Steinfeld said of her possible casting as the film's heroine.
Whether or not the "Hunger Games" role goes to Steinfeld, she's quickly becoming one of the hottest commodities in Hollywood. And the 14-year-old has already selected her first post-"True Grit" project, a film called "Forgotten," based on Cat Patrick's upcoming book of the same name. Steinfeld will play a teen who loses her memory daily.
"The Hunger Games" is slated to hit theaters on March 23, 2012.

NZ city buildings 'may be razed'
Rescuers say they are losing hope of finding the scores of people still missing Related Stories A third of the buildings in central Christchurch may need to be demolished and rebuilt, authorities in New Zealand have warned, following an earthquake. Hundreds of suburban homes damaged in Tuesday's 6.3 magnitude tremor may also have to be pulled down, officials said. Prime Minister John Key said the country may be facing its biggest ever tragedy, as the death toll rose to 144. Rescue efforts are entering a fifth night, but only bodies are being found. Hopes that the 200 people still missing will be found alive are fading, officials say. No survivors have been found in the rubble of Christchurch for more than 72 hours. “I think it's fair to say they [relatives] fear the worst but there is still a glimmer of hope”John Key Prime Minister Mr Key said the disaster "may be New Zealand's single most tragic event", outstripping a 1931 quake which killed 256. The prime minister has met relatives of the dead and missing, and announced that a two-minute silence would be held on Tuesday at 1251 local time (0051 GMT), a week after the quake struck. He said friends and relatives of those unaccounted for were fearing the worst because "a significant period of time has elapsed". "I think it's fair to say they fear the worst but there is still a glimmer of hope," he said.Auckland University structural engineer Jason Ingham told TVNZ said many damaged buildings in the city centre will have to come down. "We've collected some data over the past couple of days and it's looking like about one-third of the buildings (would be condemned)," Mr Ingham told TVNZ. The BBC's Phil Mercer says rescuers from 10 countries, including Britain, Japan and the United States, have been searching broken buildings and piles of debris, as aftershocks continue. Emergency worker Phil Parker said teams of 8 to 12 people were still going into buildings, but said the work was tough and unpredictable. Some 600 emergency workers from abroad joined the rescue effort "Obviously we're getting aftershocks so we've got to be prepared for those," he told the BBC. "We won't be going into buildings that are deemed unsafe, that's why we're checking them now, but there's always that danger of the buildings coming down on us." Meanwhile, families of the missing have appealed for the identification process to be accelerated, but officials have asked for patience. A police spokesman, Dave Cliff, said identifying the dead and updating the lists of those missing was a "slow and methodical process". "We are going through it as fast as we possibly can in order to get the deceased reunited with their loved ones," he said at a news conference in Christchurch. "The number of missing people that we have reported for which we have grave concerns, remains at more than 200 and we are progressively going through that list doing all we can to locate and validate the fact that those individuals reported missing by their families remain missing."Earlier, Christchurch mayor Bob Parker praised the progress made by emergency workers. "The structure of the city has received a shattering blow, but we're making incredible progress," Mr Parker told BBC World News on Saturday. Mr Parker said energy supplies around the city were running at around 50% capacity, and that the rest of the city would be connected within days. For many residents, it is all too much, and there is an exodus from Christchurch, our correspondent says. Officials believe up to 22 bodies may lie beneath the rubble of Christchurch Cathedral; as many as 120 are thought to have been killed inside the collapsed CTV office block, including Japanese, Chinese and Philippine nationals; many others are presumed dead inside the destroyed Pyne Gould Guinness building. Relatives of missing foreign nationals have also been arriving from overseas. Power has been restored to most of the city but water supply remains a problem, with residents being urged to boil water for drinking or cooking due to contamination fears. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 5km (3.1 miles) early on Tuesday afternoon, when the South Island city was at its busiest. CLICKABLE Select the images for more details. Bexley Streets in the north-eastern suburb of Bexley were flooded as the quake caused water mains to burst, which coincided with heavy rain. Pyne Gould Guinness The multi-storey Pyne Gould Guinness Building, which normally houses around 200 workers, collapsed. A number of people were thought to be trapped inside. Cathedral The 63m spire of the city's Anglican cathedral was toppled by the earthquake. A New Zealand TV reporter took a look inside the damaged building. CTV building Part of Christchurch's Canterbury Television [CTV] building completely collapsed in the earthquake. Some 24 people have been rescued from the building, but police said there might be between 60 and 120 bodies trapped underneath. Oxford Terrace In the aftermath of the earthquake, Rhys Taylor took this video on Oxford Terrace, 50 metres away from the city's main hospital. He said: "Cars were being used as ambulances to transport the injured." Send your pictures and videos to yourpics@bbc.co.uk or text them to 61124 (UK) or +44 7725 100 100 (International). Obama stops in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to push his National Wireless Initiative
President Obama spent some time on Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Thursday to promote his administration's National Wireless Initiative , a project first mentioned in last month's State of the Union address to make available high-speed wireless services to at least 98 percent of U.S. residents. The president's speech at Northern Michigan University in Marquette revealed few new details about the initiative; in fact much of the information was presented at a White House briefing in late June . The event was more an opportunity for him to promote a plan through which the government hopes to raise $27.8 billion over the next decade via the sale of wireless spectrum space, with about one-third of those proceeds going to help pay down the national debt. Mud volcano flow to last 26 years
The mud buried homes, schools and farmland, and has displaced thousands of families Related Stories The world's largest mud volcano, which left 13,000 families homeless, is likely to continue erupting for another 26 years, researchers have estimated. It first erupted back in May 2006, and - at its peak - was spewing 180,000 cubic metres of mud a day, equivalent to 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The volcano, in East Java, Indonesia, has buried homes, schools and farmlands over seven square kilometres. The findings have been published in the Journal of the Geological Society. This is the first reliable estimate on how long Lusi (derived from the Indonesian word for mud, lumpur, and the place where the eruption occurred, Sidoarjo) would continue erupting. Co-author Richard Davies, a geologist from Durham University's Department of Earth Sciences, said there were a number of factors that meant it was not possible to produce an estimate until now. "We did a provisional estimate in 2008, but we have significantly improved the methodology," he told BBC News. "Also, for two or three years there was a lot of debate about what caused it. "I think there were a lot of people involved in working what happened - so now we have seen the natural progression from wanting to know what caused it to wanting to know how long it will last." Under pressure The cause of the eruption was a subject of a prolonged scientific debate, with opinions divided on whether it was the result of a drilling well in the area, or a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that shook the area a few days earlier. “Within the modelling, there is a 10% chance that it will last for more than 100 years, and there is a 90% chance that it will last longer than 10 years”Professor Richard Davies Durham University In 2008, during a conference in South Africa, supporters of both hypotheses presented their arguments before a panel of independent experts. The debate was chaired by Edinburgh University's Professor John Underhill, who was also a top level football referee. The majority of experts, 42 out of 74, favoured the drilling explanation. Professor Davies supported the drilling hypothesis: "There is a lot of evidence now that shows it was caused by drilling - there was a blowout that was not controlled." In 2008, the company that was drilling in the area and blamed for triggering the volcano agreed to pay compensation to the 50,000 displaced people. However, it did not say the drilling activities were the sole cause of the volcano. Professor Davies added that the team now had confidence to publish an estimate because they also had four year's worth of data on how much material was coming out of Lusi, allowing them to calibrate the computational model developed by co-author and fellow Durham University researcher Simon Mathias. He explained that the volcano was driven by carbonated water in an aquifer, estimated to be about 2.5-3.5km beneath the surface, that travelled up through the drilled borehole and passed through a layer of muddy material (known as the Upper Kalibeng) before erupting on the surface via a 50-metre central vent. The inputs for the model of what was happening underground came from two wells; one located on the site of the central vent, and another located about 6km away, where there was a natural, smaller mud volcano. "This gave us the pressure in the actual aquifer," explained Professor Davies. "Then we considered factors such as the permeability and porosity of the rock to estimate how long would it take for fluid pressure to decline until no more fluid would come out of the vent. "It is a fairly standard methodology, but it has never really been applied to mud volcanoes before." He added that the team used a lot of different probabilities and combined them, creating a huge number of outputs (called realisations). "Out of the 10,000 realisations, we actually rejected a large number because we wanted to fit the actual rate which the mud had come out of the volcano to fit those data points," he said. They ended up with 381 realisations, which allowed them to reach the estimate of 26 years. But Professor Davies added: "Within the modelling, there is a 10% chance that it will last for more than 100 years, and there is a 90% chance that it will last longer than 10 years." The team worked on the assumption that the aquifer was not being recharged from another source, so there was no way for pressure to return once it had been discharged. "If there is recharge taking place then the 26-year estimate will be too short," he conceded. "Basically, does Lusi have any surprises left for us."This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

'Unknown' Schools The Box-Office Competition
'I Am Number Four' opens at a disappointing #3 over the holiday weekend.By Ryan J. Downey
Diane Kruger and Liam Neeson in "Unknown"
Photo: Warner Bros.
Liam Neeson has a solid future as an action hero if he wants it, but "I Am Number Four" may have stumbled in its attempt to build a new sci-fi young-adult franchise, according to box-office receipts.
"Unknown" took in an estimated $25.6 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, making the Alfred Hitchcock-inspired Neeson thriller #1. Family-friendly CG-animated film "Gnomeo & Juliet," in its second week of release, was just behind with $24.8 million, according to reports. "I Am Number Four" was a surprising third with a $22.6 million theatrical debut.
The success of "Unknown" follows on the heels of 2008's "Taken," the surprise smash with somewhat similar themes that proved a capable action vehicle for Neeson, the 58-year-old actor who was previously better known for dramatic fare. "Unknown" co-stars January Jones ("Mad Men") and Diane Kruger ("Inglourious Basterds"), and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ("Orphan").
With echoes of the supernatural alienation of "Twilight" and the soapiness of CW dramas (some of the folks involved worked on "Smallville" and "Angel"), "I Am Number Four" is based on a young adult novel with obvious eyes toward sequels woven into the plot, about an alien war that comes to Earth. The movie cost between $50 and $59 million to produce, according to the Los Angeles Times, which means the somewhat soft-opening doesn't bode well for Disney's future plans with the franchise.
Speaking of sequels, "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" debuted with $19 million to land at #5. Both prior entries in the fat-suit-driven Martin Lawrence comedy series — "Big Momma's House" and "Big Momma's House 2" — opened much stronger in 2000 and 2006, respectively.
The Adam Sandler/ Jennifer Aniston comedy "Just Go With It" dropped to #4 in its second week of release with $18.2 million — roughly a 40 percent drop from its debut. Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" fell much harder, taking in $13.6 million in its second weekend, a 54 percent drop. The 3-D documentary has taken in $48.2 million, however, which is far more than its reported $13 million production budget.
The overall box-office numbers were down roughly 30 percent from last year's $240 million gross the same weekend. "Avatar" 's strength in theaters certainly didn't hurt around that time.

Justin Bieber Is 'Really Growing Up,' Says 'Never Say Never' Director
Jon M. Chu says teen star is 'learning how to interact with people.'By Eric Ditzian
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
MTV News first interviewed Justin Bieber in September of 2009, when the pint-size pop singer was on the cusp of breaking beyond his core audience into mainstream pop stardom. Then 15 years old and relatively new to the national media spotlight, Bieber wasn't nervous so much as generally tentative, a bit clipped and repetitive in his answers.
When Bieber walked into the MTV Newsroom earlier this month to promote the difference in his on-camera demeanor couldn't have been more different: He projected a breezy confidence, at times humorous or eye-on-the-prize focused, and was engaging throughout.
That Bieber has truly matured — not just as an artist, but as a person — isn't apparent only to those who occasionally cross his path. Jon M. Chu, who directed and began working with the singer in August, has noticed the change as well.
"With the movie and going to the Grammys and being respected on so many different levels beyond just his own fanbase, he's really growing up and learning how to interact with people," Chu said.
The director said he noted a great difference in the young star's disposition following the completion of his seven-month, 86-show tour.
"He's just had time to rest," said Chu, who started shooting "Never Say Never" as Bieber was in the midst of that nonstop North American tour. At first, Bieber was standoffish. Only gradually did the two establish a close creative partnership.
"Half of it was just me gaining trust with him because I was in his face with a camera," Chu said. "It was very much like 'Almost Famous,' where I was just on the bus and he didn't really want me there. Once we got past that, we were fine."

Mexico arrest in US agent killing
Mr Zapata was buried in Texas, where a US official vowed to defeat the "scourge" that took his life Mexico's military says it has detained a suspect in the killing last week of a US immigration agent there. Jaime Zapata was shot dead on 15 February and another agent, Victor Avila, was wounded when they were attacked on a highway in San Luis Potosi. A US congressman has said they were attacked by members of the Zetas drug gang, which set up a checkpoint. Further details of the arrest were unavailable. In a statement on Wednesday, the Mexican defence secretariat said more information would be forthcoming. The agents with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement service were driving between Mexico City and the northern city of Monterrey when they were attacked, the US has said. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) said last week it was working with Mexican authorities to investigate the shooting. Mr Zapata, a 32-year-old Texas native, was assigned to the agency's human smuggling and trafficking unit, and was recently on attachment to the ICE office within the US embassy in Mexico City. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Kristin Davis Is 'Not So Into' A 'Sex And The City' Prequel
Actress says adaptation of Candace Bushnell's 'Carrie Diaries' would be 'kind of freaky.'By Eric Ditzian

That makes two of 'em. First Sarah Jessica Parker let it be known that she doesn't think the idea of a rumored "Sex and the City" prequel is such a hot idea. Now her co-star on the big and small screen, Kristin Davis, has joined her in putting down the rumored project.
"Not so into the prequel movie," she told E! Online. "Because we're us and we've discussed our history in the show already so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that? And then have like different people with our names? It's kind of freaky."
Earlier this month, reports suggested that studio execs were discussing an adaptation of "The Carrie Diaries," Candace Bushnell's 2010 novel that follows Carrie Bradshaw before she arrived in the Big Apple. Writer/director Michael Patrick King was said to be eying Blake Lively to take on the Bradshaw role in what was described as not an '80s flashback flick, but a more contemporary vision of the character's younger selves. Lively has since denied she'd be starring in the film.
While the first "Sex and the City" movie became an international smash hit in 2008, grossing over $400 million at the worldwide box office, last summer's follow-up ended up a critical punching bag and failed to cross the $100 million mark domestically. Nonetheless, Parker and Davis are holding out hope for a third film.
"I don't think we can pretend to go back. It's creating two histories," Parker told the Los Angeles Times of the prequel idea, but added of a third film featuring the established cast, "I think there's one more story to tell. I know there is."
Said Davis, "I'm always hopeful, and I always believe there's another story to tell because these are these women's lives, so why wouldn't there be another chapter. [But] I don't know if it will happen."

Yes we Kan?
Naoto Kan faces opposition to his economic reforms Most new prime ministers enjoy a honeymoon, but in Japan, it rarely lasts long. Naoto Kan has been in power only since June last year - and already opinion polls show nearly half of Japanese want him to resign. His predecessors did little better. He is the fourth man to occupy his office in as many years. Mr Kan is showing more mettle than some. He has told reporters he doesn't want to go back to the "old way of doing politics", meaning a revolving door of instantly forgettable leaders who leave little trace. But the prime minister's hand may be forced because Japan is heading towards a political impasse. The immediate problem is getting the budget for the fast-approaching new fiscal year through the Diet, or Parliament. The opposition LDP controls the upper House of Councillors, while Mr Kan's Democratic Party of Japan-led government has a majority in the lower House of Representatives. The situation is known in Japan as a "twisted Diet". The lower house is more powerful, so even if the upper house votes the budget down, the government should be able to use the lower house to push it through on a second vote. But bills to actually enact the budget require a two-thirds majority in the lower house, which the government hasn't got. Opening up Japan's economy would please the country's industrialists Smaller parties are playing tough and a revolt last week by 16 members of the Prime Minister's DPJ made things even more tricky. In the worst-case scenario, the government could be unable to do things such as issue bonds to pay for public services. Budgetary paralysis is some way off, but the political deadlock matters because it hampers any attempt to tackle Japan's big problems - an ageing population and a massive public debt. Described by pessimistic economists as a time bomb waiting to explode, the debt is about twice the size of annual economic output. By way of comparison, Greece has been tottering under a burden of about 140% of GDP. Last month Standard & Poor's downgraded Japan's debt from AA to AA- on fears that the country lacks a coherent strategy. And this week, Moody's followed suit, changing its outlook on Japan's Aa2 rating to "negative" from "stable", citing concerns it may not contain "the inexorable rise of debt".Mr Kan wants to bring in reforms. He would like to join discussions on the Trans Pacific Partnership, a vast proposed free-trade area around the Pacific Rim. Opening up Japan's economy would please Japanese industry, worried that South Korea has stolen a march by already negotiating free trade deals with the US and the EU. Japanese public debt is about twice the size of its economy But it would upset Japan's rice farmers, a politically powerful constituency that is sheltered by tariffs of nearly 800%. The prime minister is also not giving up on increasing consumption tax, currently at 5%. That would help end the situation where Japan issues more in bonds than it raises in taxes, but it is poison at the ballot box. Mr Kan may be thrown overboard by his party before he can do any of these things, or he may agree to resign as part of a deal to get the budget through. Another option being increasingly discussed in Tokyo is that he might call an early general election. It would be a big gamble. The Democratic Party of Japan has been a big disappointment since it came to power in 2008 under Yukio Hatoyama. But there is little enthusiasm for a return of the LDP, which until then had enjoyed half a century of nearly unbroken rule. If Mr Kan does not want to follow his immediate predecessors in surviving less than a year as prime minister, appealing to the people for another chance may be his best option. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

'Chronicles Of Narnia' Producer Perry Moore Found Dead
'He's been able to reach out and touch a lot of people,' father says of son, who was reportedly the victim of an overdose. By Shawn Adler

Perry Moore, executive producer of the wildly successful "The Chronicles of Narnia" trilogy and author of the young adult novel "Hero," died Thursday morning in his NYC home from an apparent overdose of OxyContin, according to The New York Times. He was 39.
Although an exact cause of death has not been determined, The Times reports that police have ruled out foul play.
Moore is reported to have been instrumental in securing the rights to film C.S. Lewis's epic series for small production house Walden Media, including negotiating their transition from Disney Studios to Fox after the second film. The three flicks completed so far, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," "Prince Caspian," and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" have combined to make over $1.5 billion worldwide.
Moore, who once promised fans he would endeavor to produce all seven of the books in the "Narnia" series, may have been well on his way to securing financing on a fourth entry, "The Magician's Nephew," according to a report on WTKR.
A prequel to the events of the first film, "The Magician's Nephew" is Lewis's shot at the Biblical story of Genesis as allegory, including parallels to the forbidden fruit and Satan. If accurate, it is unclear why Moore would choose to film this novel rather than the chronological sequel, "The Silver Chair," which follows the continuing Narnian adventures of Eustace Scrubb, the petulant child turned eventual hero portrayed by Will Poulter in "Dawn Treader."
Actress Tilda Swinton, who appeared as the titular White Witch in all three films, recently discussed the possibility of filming "The Magician's Nephew," where her character once again appears, over "Silver Chair," where she doesn't.
"I really do hope they do another 'Narnia'," the Oscar winner told Now Magazine. "It should be 'The Magician's Nephew' as that's my favorite."
Calls to Walden Media were not returned at press time.
Openly homosexual, Moore was passionate about the portrayal of gay characters in comics. Wanting to create a positive, gay super, Moore wrote "Hero," the story of Thom Creed, a high school basketball star who must simultaneously deal with both his emerging powers and sexuality.
"I have always been enthralled with comic books and superheroes, and I've always believed there should be a gay superhero. Not as a joke, not as a supporting character, not as a victim, not as a token, but as a real front-and-center hero," Moore wrote on his website about the impetus for "Hero." "Like most young people, I grew up feeling alienated and different--for very specific reasons in my case--in a place that didn't value differences. I also have this borderline-crazy belief in the power of literature to change the universe. So I'd always wanted to tell this story."
One of the last things Moore ever linked to on his personal website was a 2008 story on MTV about "Hero" being turned into an hour long series. According to WTKR, Moore was still working on bringing "Hero" to TV at the time of his death.
With partner Hunter Hill, Moore co-wrote and co-directed the drama "Lake City" in 2008.
"We're so sad," his father, Bill Moore, told The Hollywood Reporter. "He's been able to reach out and touch a lot of people."

'Iron Man 3' May Tap Shane Black As Director
Veteran screenwriter could take over franchise from departed Jon Favreau.By Eric Ditzian
Shane Black
Photo: SGranitz/WireImage
One week after news first broke that Shane Black was a top candidate to helm "Iron Man 3" in the wake of Jon Favreau's departure from the franchise, another report suggests the director is now in final negotiations to win the job.
Deadline reports that Black is essentially set to direct Robert Downey Jr. in the third "Iron Man" flick but that it's unclear whether he'll also pen the script. "That's not figured out," an unnamed source told the website.
A rep handling the film declined to comment, while Black's rep hadn't returned MTV News' requests for comment by press time.
Black only has one directorial credit on his résumé, but it's a potent one: He helmed 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," in which Downey starred and during which the two were said to strike up a close creative partnership.
Previously, Black was said to be in contention with other filmmakers also being eyed for the gig. What's more, it was reported that he'd also get a shot to pen a draft of the script. But according to Deadline, the screenwriting portion of Black's deal has not yet been hammered out.
Black, after all, is primarily known for his talents as a screenwriter. In the mid-'80s, he penned the script for "Lethal Weapon" and went on to write "The Last Boy Scout" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight," among other scripts. He's recently been hired to write "Death Note," an adaptation of a manga series, and a film based on the Doc Savage pulp novels.

Ubuntu Server Edition Hardware Certification Details
A few months ago I wrote about how Dell PowerEdge servers are certified with Ubuntu Server Edition. In this article, I dig deeper into the type of hardware certifications available from Canonical and the functional and stress tests we put our servers through to achieve certification with Ubuntu Server Edition.
Canonical categorizes two levels of server certification: Ubuntu Certified and Ubuntu Ready, as described here. For the Ubuntu Certified hardware designation, we work with Canonical on our most popular servers to ensure full functionality with Ubuntu Server Edition. For the Ubuntu Ready designation, we work with Canonical to make sure our hardware meets minimum requirements that guarantee hardware is compatible with Ubuntu Server Edition.
The tests that Canonical puts our servers through as part of the Ubuntu Certified and Ubuntu Ready designation levels include the following areas:
· Storage (Local, iSCSI, Fibre Channel) – Standard stress are performed using tools such as iozone and bonnie++
· CPU – Load, idle & topology tests, multithreading
· Memory – Recognize and utilize available memory resources
· Network – Reliability and throughput
· USB – Full communication through all USB ports
· ACPI – Suspend & Hibernate
· Optical media – Verifies that media can be read & written
· Video – Graphics and resolution support
In addition, Canonical offers the Works with Ubuntu designation, where individual peripherals (i.e. LSI storage controllers, Intel network controllers, etc.) available with Dell servers have been tested and certified with Ubuntu by the hardware manufacturer. This is yet another option that customers have to ensure that their Dell hardware is fully compatible with Ubuntu Server Edition.
Ubuntu Server Edition is not officially supported by Dell. However, Canonical offers the Ubuntu Advantage program for OS support on Dell hardware. Certified Dell hardware is preferred in order to provide best support, but it is not required.
For a current list of PowerEdge servers that have been certified with Ubuntu Server Edition, visit the Canonical hardware certification site. This site is updated regularly, so visit often for new updates.

Blu-Ray playback problem
I have a Studio Slim 540 Desktop and have just tried to pay my 1st Blu-Ray movie using PowerDVD. The move loads, plays the previews then goes to the main movie menu page. At that point it will not respond to the mouse. I put the pointer on "Play Movie" but nothing happens. I ran the updates. It could be the disk but since it works fine to that point I doubt it is defective. The system plays DVD's with no problem. Any suggestions.?

Shipping issues
So I ordered a 42" Plasma TV at a great price on 3/1. When I fished ordering it said the estimated delivery date would be today 3/5. Obviously I was thrilled with the speed but not convinced. The order shows even still that the tracking and carrier data are unavailable. This made me nervous but I read on the dell site that it could take 3 days for the tracking # to be updated and if I haven't received an Email saying it was delayed I should be fine. So what the heck I'll take today off work so I don't miss it. By 2pm I'm getting worried so I call customer service. They couldn't even tell me what carrier had it. She told me she would report it and I could expect a response in 48 hours. "So it is for sure not coming today right?" I said. "Well the delivery date is the 5th so it should." At that point I knew she had pretty much the exact info I have and either didn't have the ability or desire to help me further. It is now after 5pm and I am wishing I had stuck with my instinct to assume it wouldn't actually get here when they indicated. Even if by some miracle it actually shows up today I'm not terribly impressed all the way around.cell phone application

US vetoes UN resolution on Israel
Modiin is one of the West Bank Jewish settlements in dispute The US has vetoed an Arab resolution at the UN Security Council condemning Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories as an obstacle to peace. All 14 other members of the Security Council backed the resolution, which had been endorsed by the Palestine Liberation Organisation. It was the first veto exercised by the Obama administration which had promised better relations with the Muslim world. A Palestinian official said the talks process would now be "re-assessed". Washington was under pressure from Israel and Congress, which has a strong pro-Israel lobby, to use its veto. The Obama administration's decision risks angering Arab peoples at a time of mass street protests in the Middle East, the BBC's Barbara Plett reports from the UN. It had placed enormous pressure on the Palestinians to withdraw the resolution and accept alternatives, but these were ultimately rejected. While stating that it opposed new settlements, the administration argued that taking the issue to the UN would only complicate efforts to resume stalled negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians on a two-state peace deal. "Unfortunately, this draft resolution risks hardening the positions of both sides," said the US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice. The resolution, sponsored by at least 130 countries, declared Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories were illegal and a "major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace". Speaking from Ramallah in the West Bank, PLO secretary general Yasser Abed Rabbo said the US veto was "unfortunate" and "affected the credibility of the US administration".This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

At the same time that Daniel Radcliffe readies to return to Broadway — previews of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" begin on February 26 — the 21-year-old actor is continuing to plot his post-"Harry Potter" career on the big screen.
Radcliffe is now attached to star in "The Amateur Photographer," an indie comedy from writer/director Christopher Monger, according to Variety. Monger shared writing credits on HBO's "Temple Grandin," the biopic that earned him an Emmy nomination and Claire Danes a Golden Globe win.
Set in a New England mill town during the 1970s, the movie will follow Radcliffe as a young man who finds in himself an unlikely artistic streak when he begins photographing the "most intimate moments" of the townspeople's lives, as Variety puts it, and ends up battling "local authorities while bringing a bit of a velvet revolution to the community."
Radcliffe has already wrapped production on his first film following the completion of the "Harry Potter" series. "The Woman in Black" is a thriller in which Radcliffe plays a lawyer who travels to a strange town filled with supernatural secrets. The Brit has also lined up another big-screen project in "All Quiet on the Western Front." He's set to play a German soldier during World War I when the production kicks off in the spring of 2012. And come July, he'll be busy with promotional duties for the final part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
For now, though, Radcliffe is settling in on Broadway. After a month of previews, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" will officially open on March 27.

Huge protest over Djibouti leader
Ismael Omar Guelleh succeeded his uncle in 1999 Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Djibouti to call for President Ismael Omar Guelleh to step down. The demonstrators were reportedly monitored closely by security forces in riot gear. Mr Guelleh's family has governed the Red Sea city state since independence from France in 1977. The United States has a large military base in Djibouti. The constitution was last year amended, to let Mr Guelleh seek a third term. Some of the protesters say they will stay in a stadium until Mr Guelleh, 63, leaves power in the Somali-speaking country. Elections are due in April. Mr Guelleh was re-elected unopposed in 2005. The protesters held banners reading "IOG out" and "No to a third mandate", reports the AFP news agency. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

The kidnapped toddler found by an internet campaignRelated Stories For little Lele's homecoming the crowds brought the town of Qianjiang to a standstill. They blocked the road and set off thunderous rounds of firecrackers, welcoming back a boy they thought was lost forever. The six-year-old climbed out of the car and the crowd swept forward to see him. His grandfather picked him up, hugged him tight and wept. All around fireworks were set off, exploding then showering the throng of people with burning fragments. Lele's story has gripped many in China, the tale of a boy, kidnapped three years ago, and returned to his family last week, thanks to the internet. But it wasn't the police who found the boy; it was Lele's own father, a poor, migrant worker, who solved this crime. He did it using Twitter-type microblogs. Twitter is banned in China but similar services have tens of millions of users. These sites are giving ordinary Chinese people a voice they have never had before, empowering them.As the crowds pressed around, Lele's father Peng Gaofeng, told me: "I found him with the help of people from all walks of life, using the great platform of the internet. "I'm really grateful. I want to say thanks to all the people who have helped me to find my son." He waved to the crowd beaming a smile. Mobile phone footage of Lele aged 3 shows him boisterous and happy at home On film taken on a mobile phone three years ago, Lele, then aged three can be seen, boisterous and happy at home, playing with his father. Not long afterwards he was snatched off the street from outside his father's mobile phone shop in the southern city of Shenzhen. Security cameras filmed the kidnap, a man carrying the boy away in the night, looking warily over his shoulder. The kidnapper can be seen walking down a busy street. Tired he puts the boy down for a few seconds, then picks him up again. Despite the video evidence the police could not find Lele. Instead the authorities turned on Lele's father, pressuring him to give up his very public campaign to find his child. He had been travelling across southern China looking for his son, putting up posters, making appearances on television. They wanted him to remain silent so he didn't disturb the appearance of "social harmony". When I met Peng Gaofeng 18 months ago he agreed to talk, but only discreetly, in a private room in a local restaurant because, he said, police had been monitoring him, and had warned him against making too much fuss. "If there were just one or two cases it would be a minor thing for the police," Peng Gaofeng told me then, "but there are thousands of us who have lost our kids. It's a massive issue. "By campaigning openly we undermine the image the government wants to project that this is a harmonious society."It is estimated that up to 20,000 children in China are kidnapped every year. Some are sold to gangs to be used as beggars, others to families who don't have a son but want one. Most are never recovered. Deng Fei tweeted Lele's picture to his 2m followers and the photo on the right was sent back by a user Although in the past two years police have stepped up a campaign against child trafficking and say they have rescued over 6,700 children. Little Lele's family have had many dark, depressing days in the past three years. But Peng Gaofeng refused to give up. Instead he found help from Deng Fei, a journalist, who has a massive following on the internet. Twitter-type microblogs took off in popularity in China last year. Well over 100 million people now use them. Deng Fei tweeted Lele's picture to his two million followers. Someone saw it and spotted the boy in Jiangsu province, 2,000km away from where he was kidnapped. So Lele's father headed there. Overcome with emotion he waited outside the police station as officers went to investigate the sighting. They returned with his son. Peng Gaofeng shouted the boy's name. Lele replied: "That man crying is my father." It was all filmed and tweeted live by journalist Deng Fei. Inside the police station Peng Gaofeng called his wife to tell her the news, breaking down in sobs as he told her the boy had been found. Then he clutched Lele close and told him: "No matter where you go, I will find you." China's people, for so long controlled or ignored by the state, are discovering the power of the microblog. It can force change, says Deng Fei. "With this tool, everyone can express themselves immediately. Things can no longer be kept secret. Microblogs break the monopoly on information. They mean it can flow freely. A lot of things in China are caused by the lack of transparency here. So a lot of things will change now."Lele had been taken by a man whom, it seems, wanted a son of his own. He apparently told his wife the boy was his son by another woman. The man died last month, and Lele's family say they are not going to press charges. Peng Gaofeng bypassed the traditional media to set his own agenda Back in Qianjiang the celebrations went on late into the day. A giant feast was laid on by the family, huge pans of noodles and spicy chicken laced with red chillies. Lele's mother held him tight. "When I heard Lele was found it was a mixture of emotions," she told me. "All the unjust treatment we'd suffered, all the sadness came up. But I was excited and happy too that we'd finally found him. "I know he was aware that he didn't belong with that family. I think he's coping very well, better than I imagined." The highlight for Lele was a giant, three-tiered cake covered in lurid-coloured icing. He cut a slice then giggled as he fed his father. The photographers snapped away. Lele's story transfixed many because it is much more than a kidnap with a happy ending. It's also a tale about the way the internet is starting to change lives in China. Ordinary people, using just a mobile phone or internet connection, now have their own platform, a place where they can speak out. They can broadcast their stories, their thoughts, their concerns. In a nation where the Communist Party and the state have always dominated public discourse, the individual suddenly has a voice. Microblogs create a space where people who feel wronged by indifferent, apathetic or corrupt officials can speak out. And, occasionally, like Peng Gaofeng, an individual can connect with others, bypassing the traditional media, to set their own agenda. That also makes the microblogs a potential challenge to China's Communist Party and its cherished control of the media. For now it seems to be tolerating them, even encouraging them in this case, where they have helped find missing children. But it could, one day, shut them down if it feels threatened by them. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never': Five Burning Questions Answered!
We cornered director Jon Chu and pressed him about deleted scenes, sequel plans and more.By Kara Warner
Justin Bieber
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
As expected, Justin Bieber's feature film debut, "Never Say Never," fared well at the box office in its opening weekend. The 3-D movie came in at #2, not far behind Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston's "Just Go With It," which bested Biebs by $700,000 in ticket sales.
And given the dedication of the teen star's Beliebers, it's likely the movie will continue to pull in the cash over the next few weeks. But for those who've seen the film and were left wanting more, MTV News enlisted director Jon Chu to address our five burning questions about the film.
How Many Fan Videos Made the Final Cut?
"We put a lot [in the film]," Chu said. "When we first started the film, we asked a lot of people to submit lip-syncing videos, fan videos, to see where it could fit into the fabric of our movie and we found lots of fun ways. Sometimes it's a screen grab on some of the Twitter messages that he gets sent, sometimes it's part of a mosaic, where they're all singing to Justin wherever they may be in the world. I don't know the exact number. ... But there are a lot we used for just a little bit, so you have to kind of go back and take a picture of it so you can see yourself."
Any Extra Footage for the DVD?
"On a regular movie, I usually have three or four terabytes of footage, which is a lot. I shoot a lot," Chu explained. "For this movie we had over 30 terabytes of film. This goes from his youth, to him playing sports to him on the road before we got there and then us when we actually got there, as well as all of the 3-D cameras we had. There were 11 3-D cameras shooting the concerts. There's a lot of footage. There is a lot of stuff I wish we could've fit into this movie and hopefully we'll find a way to fit in another one.
"There's really funny, great stuff, but our main thing was to tell the core story of how he got here as a human being and his relationship with his family, his new family and how he fought to accomplish his dreams. We really laser-focused on those things."
What Are the DVD Plans?
"We're thinking about what other things you could use this material for because there is a lot of it; a lot of funny stuff," the director teased. His pranks, and all those things — we have some in the movie, but we have a lot more, and we've been talking about how to creatively put it in a DVD. Not just, 'Oh, here's a clip of this, and here's a clip of that,' but to wrap it up in some sort of form. We're working on that now."
When Will the DVD Be Released?
"I don't know the exact date, but I think it would be this year at some point. [Possibly] in time for the holiday season."
Has Paramount Asked For a Sequel?
"In my mind, when I started this, I always told Paramount that it's the first of a trilogy. This is the first step of his career and it would be really interesting to come back in six years and see where he is and what's happened, and then six years after that. Whether that's a reality or not, we'll see, but I know that this is a really fascinating story. It's an origin story of someone I look up to and respected a lot through this process and I didn't know that I would necessarily."

'Just Go With It': The Reviews Are In!
Adam Sandler fans will surely hit the theater whether critics are into it or not.By Eric Ditzian
Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in "Just Go With It"
Photo: Sony Pictures
Like the iPhone 4, Adam Sandler movies are basically review-proof. His comedies never engender the sort of critical praise that, say, Judd Apatow's often do, yet crowds reliably show up to watch Sandler do his thing.
So perhaps we shouldn't pay much mind to the often harsh reviews that have greeted his latest laugher, the Jennifer Aniston-co-starring rom-com, "Just Go With It." After all, even in the face of stiff competition from Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," Sandler's flick is expected to win the weekend's box-office crown.
Possibly, though, you want to know a little more about "Just Go With It" than whose face fills nearly every scene. In that case, read on to find out what the critics have to say!
The Story
"Sandler plays Danny, a plastic surgeon and schlub who marries a shrew but discovers post-divorce (and post-nose job) that the gold band is a magnet for bar chicks. That changes when he meets Palmer (the stunning Brooklyn Decker), which prompts him to shove the ring in his pocket to woo her beachside. Everything's hunky-dory until Palmer discovers the ring in Danny's pocket and naturally assumes he's married. Here's where the film takes its first characteristic step: Instead of explaining himself, Danny concocts a bizarre lie that he's separated from his wife and close to a divorce. To maintain that lie, he persuades his assistant, Katherine (Aniston), to not only play his soon-to-be-ex-wife but to come with her two children to Hawaii to, well, make the movie feature length." — Scott Bowles, USA Today
The Look and the Laughs
"[Director Dennis] Dugan constantly shoots their paid vacation and indeed the entire film like a commercial, and with the rampant product placement, it's hard not to believe that's the case. Cuts are sloppy, dialogue looping is obvious, and although they must've seemed fresh after every take on set, Sandler's perpetual off-the-cuff name checks become a monotonous crutch in scene after scene. The man can't resist ethnic stereotypes, plastic surgery mishaps, shots to the groin or sheep resuscitation gags (a moment any other film would've played off as something funnier said than shown), and the film runs nearly two hours for all its allegedly comedic indulgences." — William Goss, Cinematical
The Chemistry
"[Aniston] has got expert comic timing when all those around her have none; she's got lightness and finesse when everyone else is being indulgently silly. She plays like a grown-up; she looks fab. And she gets a real commitment out of Sandler -- her performance makes him grow up, too. Amidst the wreckage of 'Just Go With It,' Aniston and Sandler have a real chemistry. They should go elsewhere with it." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
The Dissenters
"Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production team has rarely put much stock in the rules of classical storytelling, but its newest project, 'Just Go With It,' manages to misfire in two seemingly incompatible directions. A puerile kiddie-comedy without the anarchic energy, and a schmaltzy romantic comedy without the sweetness, this Hawaii-set farce is too frantic and too lackadaisical a take on the oft-adapted French play 'Cactus Flower.' Working with longtime director Dennis Dugan, Sandler and the rest of the film's marquee cast could nonetheless steer it toward good returns." — Andrew Barker, Variety
The Final Word
"It had been one of the minor inducements to longevity, this crazy hope of one day actually seeing Jennifer Aniston in a good movie. That day arrives with 'Just Go With It,' a very funny romantic comedy that nicely combines Adam Sandler's acerbic sweetness with Aniston's down-to-earth warmth -- and that finds an excuse for Aniston to both play an average person and yet dress like a movie star. The screenplay has a setup that borders on farce, but the romantic heart of it is strong and expresses something unusual. It's a movie about the romance of familiarity, about the satisfaction and spiritual necessity of actually knowing someone and being known. So much of movie romance is usually about the opposite of that, about going off into the unknown, about adventure in the form of, not physical danger, but emotional danger. 'Just Go With It' makes a feint in that direction, but not enough to fool anybody." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

'Nuclear virus' targets uncovered
Stuxnet may have been designed to target Iran's nuclear programme Related Stories A powerful internet worm repeatedly targeted five industrial facilities in Iran over 10 months, ongoing analysis by security researchers shows. Stuxnet, which came to light in 2010, was the first-known virus specifically designed to target real-world infrastructure, such as power stations. Security firm Symantec has now revealed how waves of new variants were launched at Iranian industrial facilities. Some versions struck their targets within 12 hours of being written. "We are trying to do some epidemiology," Orla Cox of Symantec told BBC News. "We are trying to understand how and why it spread."The worm first grabbed headlines late last year after initial analysis showed that the sophisticated piece of malware had likely been written by a "nation state" to target Iran's nuclear programme, including the uranium enrichment centrifuges at the Natanz facility. Russia's Nato ambassador recently said the virus "could lead to a new Chernobyl," referring to the 1986 nuclear accident. Although speculation surrounds which countries may have been involved in its creation, the origins of the worm still remain a mystery. “One organisation was attacked three times, another was targeted twice”Orla Cox Symantec Iranian officials have admitted that the worm infected staff computers. However, they have repeatedly denied that the virus caused any major delays to its nuclear power programme, although its uranium enrichment programme is known to have suffered setbacks. The new research, which analysed 12,000 infections collected by various anti-virus firms, shows that the worm targeted five "industrial processing" organisations in Iran. "These were the seeds of all other infections," said Ms Cox. The firm was able to identify the targets because Stuxnet collected information about each computer it infected, including its name, location and a time stamp of when it was compromised. This allowed the researchers to track the spread of the virus. Symantec declined to name the five organisations and would not confirm whether they had links to the country's nuclear programme. However, Ms Cox, said that previous research confirmed that the worm could disrupt the centrifuges used to enrich uranium. The five organisations were targeted repeatedly between June 2009 and April 2010, she said. "One organisation was attacked three times, another was targeted twice," she said. These waves of attacks used at least three different variants of the worm. "We believe there was also a fourth one but we haven't seen it yet," she said. The worm seeks out specific industrial hardware once inside an organisation Analysis of the different strains and the time it took between the code being written and it making its first infection suggested that the virus writers had "infiltrated" targeted organisations, she said. The researchers drew this conclusion because Stuxnet targeted industrial systems not usually connected to the internet for security reasons. Instead, it infects Windows machines via USB keys - commonly used to move files around and usually plugged into a computer manually. The virus therefore had to be seeded on to the organisation's internal networks by someone, either deliberately or accidentally. The virus could have been spread between the organisations by contractors that worked for more than one of them, she said. "We see threads to contractors used by these companies," she said. "We can see links between them."Once on a corporate network, the worm is designed to seek out a specific configuration of industrial control software made by Siemens. The code can then reprogram so-called PLC (programmable logic control) software to give attached industrial machinery new instructions. Previous analysis suggests that it targeted PLCs operating at frequencies between 807 and 1210Hz, a range that includes those used to control uranium enrichment centrifuges. Subverting PLCs requires detailed knowledge and, although security researchers had raised concerns about exploits in the past, had not been seen before Stuxnet. Ms Cox said the firm's analysis revealed incomplete code in Stuxnet that looked like it was intended to target another type of PLC. "The fact that it is incomplete could tell us that [the virus writers] were successful in what they had done," she said. The novelty of the virus, combined with attack mechanisms that targeted several previously unknown and unpatched vulnerabilities in Windows, have led many to describe Stuxnet as "one of the most sophisticated pieces of malware ever". However, research by Tom Parker from security firm Securicon says that elements of it were "not that advanced at all". "I've compared this less advanced code to other malware and it does not score very highly," he said last year. Ms Cox agrees that elements of the code and some of the techniques it uses are relatively simple. But, she says, that misses the bigger picture. "If you look at the sum of its parts, then it is certainly very sophisticated," she said.
