Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Leads New Era Of Outcast Anthems
Taking cues from Frank Zappa, the Ramones and Nirvana, Gaga carries the torch for the outsider in pop music.By James Montgomery

In the 1970s, when disco was in full swing and rock and roll was posturing its way into arenas, four goony, glue-sniffing kids in Forest Hills, Queens, threw on leather jackets and began bashing out two-minute tunes with titles like "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Beat on the Brat." They called themselves the Ramones, and not only were they probably the first punk band on planet Earth, but they were most definitely outcasts, in every sense of the world.
Of course, the Ramones certainly weren't the first musical outcasts. Theirs is a legacy that reaches all the way back to the dawn of recorded music, from the likes of the Hoosier Hot Shots and Slim Galliard, scatting madman Cab Calloway and the "shocking" Screamin' Jay Hawkins, to midcentury curios like bizarro bandleader Spike Jones, deep-fried '60s oddballs like Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart and even contemporaries like the Cramps and the Talking Heads. But unlike any who came before them, the Ramones helped usher in an era — and a genre — in which being odd was championed. It would continue through the 1980s, thanks to the Heads, West Coast punk acts like Black Flag and the Minutemen, and college-radio darlings like R.E.M. — and, of course, the eternally outcast world of heavy metal — then truly break through in the '90s, with the chart-topping success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins, and the rise of hip-hop outfits like the Wu-Tang Clan, the Pharcyde and the incomparable Kool Keith.
Of course, in the 2000s, things sort of petered out. Rock and hip hop became increasingly lunkheaded and lumbering, and the meek were shoved from the spotlight. And it bears mention that, even during the outcast heyday, for the most part, established acts — i.e., anyone who had plenty to lose — stayed as far removed from the fringe as possible, or if they dared stray outside their lane, they suffered the consequences (the classic example being, of course, Madonna, who nearly submarined her entire career with the simultaneous release of the Erotica album and its accompaniment, the coffee-table book "Sex"). There's a reason it's called "popular" music, after all.
These days, however, things appear to be changing. For the first time, established pop megastars are embracing those on the fringes of society — and finding success in the process. It all started, appropriately enough, with the rise of Lady Gaga, who made no bones about the fact that her earliest support came from the gay community, and over the past year, through videos like "Alejandro" and her campaign against "don't ask, don't tell," she has become the outcast icon of our time. Others followed suit — like Pink, who scored hits with underdog anthems like "Raise Your Glass" and "F***** Perfect"; Ke$ha, whose "We R Who We R" went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100; and even Katy Perry, who dedicated her "Firework" video to the "It Gets Better" campaign — and it truly seems that, for the first time since the 1990s, being an outcast was not only acceptable, it was downright mainstream.
Now, Gaga is poised to return with "Born This Way," the first single from her album of the same name. On Thursday, she released the song's lyrics, and if it's not already the biggest outcast anthem of all time, well, then it probably will be very soon. In fact, there's nary an outsider group Gaga doesn't mention in the song — gays, bisexuals, transgenders, ethnic minorities, the disabled, the bullied, the poor — which makes it, and its near-inevitable chart success, incredibly noteworthy. After all, here is Lady Gaga, currently the biggest artist on the planet, releasing a song that not only calls for acceptance of all people, but drags those who aim to oppress directly into the center of the ring. It is not only fierce, it's downright fearless. Gaga has plenty to lose, but she couldn't care less.
And perhaps "Born This Way" is just the byproduct of the era in which we live, a time when social mores are constantly debated, when boundaries are being expanded and contracted, almost daily, and when it truly seems possible that maybe — just maybe — the outcasts could inherit the earth. After all, Bill Gates was an outcast, Barack Obama was too — and look how things worked out for them. And while this may put the fear of God in some folks, it seems that change is inevitable, and, as it is wont to do, pop music is there to provide the soundtrack to all of that change. Just like in the 1960s, when the biggest rock and folk acts of the day led the charge for social rebellion, so too may Lady Gaga. And she'll do it on the biggest stage imaginable. Of course, that might just be speculation, but it's certainly been a long time coming.

Demi Lovato Leaves Treatment

Demi Lovato has left treatment.
MTV News has confirmed that the teen star is already back in Los Angeles after seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues." She entered treatment back in October, leaving her tour with the Jonas Brothers early.
"Demi came back to L.A. earlier this week," a source close to the star told us. "She completed her prescribed treatment and an outpatient program near the treatment facility. For now, she is getting back to her regular routine and spending time with her family and close friends. Demi will continue to focus first and foremost on her well-being."
The source continued: "To that end, she will continue to see doctors in L.A. who will help her work on the issues she confronted in treatment. She is so grateful to all of her fans for their unbelievable support and looks forward to being able to talk to all of them very soon."
Lovato was spotted near a treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois, around Christmas when she took some time to celebrate the holidays with her family. Lovato entered treatment after a reported incident with backup dancer Alex Welch. The two later worked out a financial settlement after the alleged incident left the dancer injured.
Despite the personal setback, Lovato has a big 2011 ahead of her, including work on a new album, a planned tour and her hit Disney show "Sonny With a Chance." She also took home two People's Choice Awards earlier this month.
"I wish to thank all the friends and fans who voted for me for the People's Choice Awards and the Hot Hits Hottest Teen Stars of 2010," she wrote on Facebook earlier this month. "I want to make sure my fans know how thankful I am for all their love, support and prayers during this difficult time. Thank you for standing beside me through it all."

"Do not track" options in store for Chrome, IE and Firefox
Google, Microsoft and Mozilla are moving quickly to respond to calls from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and consumer watchdogs for a "do not track" option that allows Web surfers to protect their private information from being exploited by advertising networks. By announcing plug-in software and new anti-tracking features, the major Web browser makers have decided it's in their best interest to offer such options, even if it comes at the expense of some revenue generated by ads that use online behavior data to target consumers. Oscar Nominee James Franco Set To Direct 'As I Lay Dying'
The '127 Hours' star and Oscar host tells MTV News he'll helm movie based on William Faulkner's novel this summer.By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
James Franco
Photo: MTV News
James Franco may very well be Hollywood's ultimate Renaissance man. In addition to his already busy 2011 schedule, which includes attending the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, both as first-time host and Best Actor nominee (for "127 Hours"), the actor/writer/student will also tackle directing duties.
Over the weekend, MTV News managed to catch a minute with Franco at the Sundance Film Festival, where he revealed to us yet another impressive future endeavor. The star spilled, "This summer I'm going to direct a movie based on William Faulkner's novel 'As I Lay Dying.' "
Franco, who has in the past done some work behind the camera, explained, "I shoot a test of the whole movie before I make a movie. So we just shot a test."
Despite working from a lengthy script (160 pages, to be exact), Franco did an entire pre-shoot with actors in North Carolina on New Year's Day. And in keeping with his already unorthodox methods, the 32-year-old noted that the actors he used for the test filming won't necessarily be the ones he works with on the final product.
While Franco says he "might" appear in his adaptation of "As I Lay Dying," he has his sights set on his favorite actor, "Boardwalk Empire" and "Revolutionary Road" star Michael Shannon, whom he has worked with twice before. The cast already includes Paul Dano ("Little Miss Sunshine," "There Will Be Blood") and, if all works out for Franco, Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor," "Six Feet Under") and Joaquin Phoenix will be onboard as well.

Yemenis rally against president
Yemen's protests are said to be inspired by the popular revolt in Tunisia Related stories Thousands of Yemenis are demonstrating in the capital Sanaa, calling on Ali Abdullah Saleh, president for more than 30 years, to step down. This comes after mass protests in Egypt and a popular uprising in Tunisia that ousted its long-time leader. Yemeni opposition members and youth activists gathered in four parts of the city, including Sanaa University, chanting anti-government slogans. They also called for economic reforms and an end to corruption. Yemenis complain of mounting poverty among a growing young population and frustration with a lack of political freedoms. The country has also been plagued by a range of security issues, including a separatist movement in the south and an uprising of Shia Houthi rebels in the north. There fears that Yemen is becoming a leading al-Qaeda haven, with the high numbers of unemployed youths seen as potential recruits for Islamist militant groups.Economic and social problemsPoorest country in the Middle East with 40% of Yemenis living on less than $2 (£1.25) a dayMore than two-thirds of the population under the age of 24Illiteracy stands at over 50%, unemployment at 35%Dwindling oil reserves and falling oil revenues; Little inward investmentAcute water shortageWeak central government Protesters gathered in several locations of the city on Thursday morning, chanting that it was "time for change", and referring to the popular uprising in Tunisia that ousted President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali earlier this month. Opposition MP Abdulmalik al-Qasuss, from the al-Islah (Reform) party, echoed the demands of the protesters when he addressed them. "We gather today to demand the departure of President Saleh and his corrupt government," he was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. There have been a series of smaller protests in the lead up to Thursday's mass demonstrations. On Saturday, hundreds of Sanaa University students held competing protests on campus, with some calling for President Saleh to step down and others for him to remain in office. Over the weekend, Yemeni authorities arrested prominent rights activist, Tawakul Karman, accusing her of organising the anti-government protests. Her arrest sparked further protests in Sanaa. After her release from prison on Monday, she told CNN that there was a revolution taking place in her country inspired by Tunisia's so-called Jasmine Revolution. Protests in Tunisia have ended 23 years of President Ben Ali's rule and ignited unrest elsewhere in the region, including Algeria and Egypt. President Saleh, a Western ally, became leader of North Yemen in 1978, and has ruled the Republic of Yemen since the north and south merged in 1990. He was last re-elected in 2006. Yemenis are angry over parliament's attempts to loosen the rules on presidential term limits, sparking opposition concerns that Mr Saleh might try to appoint himself president for life. Mr Saleh is also accused of wanting to hand power to his eldest son, Ahmed, who heads the elite presidential guard, but he has denied the accusations. "We are a republic. We reject bequeathing [the presidency]", he said in a televised address on Sunday. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Behavior Frontiers: Can Social Science Combat Climate Change?
Roughly 44 percent of Californians smoked tobacco in 1965. By 2010, 9.3 percent did--a shift that might have seemed impossible before it happened. Understanding exactly how such a social transformation occurred in the past may prove key to understanding how individuals might alter their behavior to help combat climate change in the future.By studying past instances of social transformation, scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) hope to predict future change in response to global warming as part of California’s Carbon Challenge--a study commissioned by the California Energy Commission to help the state cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels. LBNL energy technology scientist Jeffery Greenblatt and his colleagues are analyzing technology options as well as data records from 10 historical behavior changes--smoking cessation, seat belt use, vegetarianism, drunk driving, recycling and yoga, among others. Steven Tyler's Best 'American Idol' Quotes From Milwaukee
'Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!' new judge says after one surprising audition.By Kara Warner
Steven Tyler on Wednesday's "American Idol"
Photo: FOX
In addition to the excitement and anticipation that is involved in watching the audition rounds of "American Idol," the unexpected remarks that come out of new judge Steven Tyler's mouth are quickly becoming just as (if not more) entertaining to listen to as the contestants' vocal stylings.
We weren't sure Tyler could top last week's performance, but mere minutes into Wednesday's (January 26) episode (after opening the show singing an a cappella "Idol" version of "Sweet Emotion" with Randy Jackson), we knew we were in for another night of Tyler treats. Here are our favorites from the Milwaukee auditions:
» "Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!" Tyler exclaimed after hearing Scotty McCreery's deep-voice rendition of Josh Turner's "Your Man."
» "Well hellfire, save matches, f--- a duck and see what hatches!"
» "You got a certain something. I can't put my finger on it right now, but it's got a lot of character."
» "Dawg is going to turn into a pussycat right now," he said about Jackson, who was debating whether to send a sensitive 15-year-old hopeful through to Hollywood.
» "You could call me 'late for dinner' and I'd still love you," Tyler told Jennifer Lopez after she called him "Steve" and he asked to be called "Steven." "But not lunch."
» After Randy said auditioner Jerome Bell had "all of the isms jumping off," Steven responded, "And none of the 'wasms.' "
» "I found you to be disturbingly great," Tyler said of 27-year-old accountant Steve Beghun. "Weird, compelling, great. Really different."
» "I've never heard anybody squeeze that song, but you squeezed it so slow it sounded like Vanilla Fudge singing 'Eleanor Rigby,' " Tyler told Obama impressionist Albert Rogers.
» "I might be colorblind, but unless you borrowed my lipstick, is that your real lips?" he asked student teacher Scott Dangerfield.
» "Well, you look like you could be one of my ... nope, not gonna say it," he told contestant Alyson Jados, either censoring himself from saying something dirty or maybe suggesting she looked like one of his daughters. Instead, Tyler said, "Friends. [You look like you could be] one of my friends."

EqualLogic named InfoWorld?s best storage for 2011 and why it should matter to you
Recently InfoWeek announced that Dell EqualLogic’s (EQL) PS 6010XVS won top storage award for 2011. The PS 6010XVS is a SAN array that comes with 8 Solid State Drives (SSD) and 8 15K rpm Hard Disk Drives (HDD). It’s fast and like all of EQL products comes with all the SAN storage management software at no additional fees. With EQL’s SAN management you also get auto-tiering which allows the SAN to automatically analyze I/O patterns to determine most used data blocks. Then the EQL SAN optimizes response by placing data on the appropriate disks.
The PS 6010XVS address two big challenges in OEM storage designs today. One is how to best use SSD for their performance and two is how to move data across the various tiers of storage that exist now compared to a few years ago. In my opinion, it solves these challenges because it right sizes the SSD to HDD and it knows how to migrate data (auto-tiering).
So what does that mean for Dell EQL OEMs? Here is my take on the benefits:
No change to current application software: With no change to your current application software you can benefit from SSD products today. With an award winning solution that you can show your customers. That means being able to sell faster performance now and not be held by waiting for your own internal solutions.
Auto-tiering: Auto-tiering within the EQL SAN means leveraging a ton of storage engineering know-how. The EQL engineers have done numerous studies across a wide range of storage use cases to create the right policy for moving data to the right disks. Unless your applications are a special use-case why repeat the engineering efforts and best of all its auto-tiering is just part of the EQL SAN software, read that as no additional license fees.
Right sizing of performance to cost: The PS 6010XVS give you the right sizing of performance to cost. SSD are coming down in pricing, but they are still significantly more expense than HDD. Again, EQL’s storage engineering have studied the problem and created a SAN product that addresses the need for performance but not any price.
Balance: For you it’s about have a single standard SKU item that is the balance you want from your storage provider. No need to buy half an array of SSD and half an array of HDD to get the same balance with all the associated additional costs.
Improved performance: Improves performance of multi-tier applications like Virtual Desktop. Reduces time to boot multi-VM by up to 76%. If your applications are running virtually then the ability to place your base image on the SSD with their faster read performance will give you immediate performance gain and integrate easier on the PS 6010XVS.
Over the last five to ten years a lot companies have been developing products to make managing and using storage easier for end-user. We have seen that this is a winning formula, just read the newspaper on recent storage companies acquisitions, the question for all OEMs is how best to leverage other’s storage products within your product strategy.

'Toy Story 3' Filmmakers Rendered 'Speechless' By Oscar Nominations
'I feel like I've been blasted to infinity and beyond,' director Lee Unkrich says.By Terri Schwartz

Pixar and Disney continued to set the standard for quality animation with this year's "Toy Story 3," and so it was no surprise when the film was nominated for five Academy Awards Tuesday morning (January 25): Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, Original Song, Achievement in Sound Editing and Adapted Screenplay. It's the second year in a row that a Pixar/Disney film has been nominated in both the Best Picture and Best Animated Feature categories, and director Lee Unkrich is feeling the love.
"It's an incredible honor to be nominated by the Academy. When we began making the first 'Toy Story' nearly 16 years ago, we never could have imagined the journey on which these films, and these characters, would take us," he said in a statement. "For 'Toy Story 3' to be recognized by the Academy as not only one of the best animated films of the year, but also as one of the 10 best pictures of the year, is both humbling and overwhelming. I'm speechless — I feel like I've been blasted to infinity and beyond."
MTV News caught up with Unkrich on the phone to talk to him about the nomination, which he called "completely mind-blowing." He said he was so prepped for the nominations announcement this morning that he set his alarm and watched the live stream of the announcements with his wife and 13-year-old daughter.
Unkrich said he was disappointed that the Best Animated Feature was limited to only three films, because there were many other great animated films this year that weren't acknowledged.
" 'Tangled' didn't get nominated and I was really rooting for them, they really deserved to be in there. And I'm disappointed for those guys because they made a really beautiful film that was definitely Oscar-worthy," Unkrich said.
This is the first time a "Toy Story" film has been nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar because the first two installments were released in 1995 and 1999, and the category was not created until 2001. The "Toy Story" films have never won an Oscar before. At least "Toy Story 3" seems like a shoo-in for Best Animated Feature.
It's also the second time a "Toy Story" film has been nominated for its screenplay. The first "Toy Story" was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, with Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow, John Lasseter, Pete Docter and Joe Ranft getting story and writing credits. For "Toy Story 3," it is Oscar-winner Michael Arndt who is credited with writing the screenplay for the film, and he couldn't be more pleased. Considering it's only his second writing credit (after "Little Miss Sunshine"), he certainly has a right to be.
"I've spent my whole life being inspired and moved by the work of the screenwriters of the Academy, so to be recognized by the Writers Branch this morning is deeply gratifying and profoundly humbling," Arndt said in a statement. "While I wish I could hog all the credit for myself, I would have gone nowhere and done nothing without the collective brilliance of the entire creative community at Pixar, who have always maintained that 'story comes first' and who are crazy enough to actually believe it."
In addition to the four nominations for "Toy Story 3," the Pixar short that premiered before the film, "Day & Night," also received a nomination, for Best Animated Short. This is director Teddy Newton's second directing credit. He is best known for his voice acting in Pixar films (he was Chatter Telephone in "Toy Story 3").
"I thank the Academy for this extraordinary recognition. Creating 'Day & Night' with the high-quality team of artists and technicians within Pixar was truly a non-stop sensation of positive energy for me. I was constantly amazed by the crew's fortitude to push through challenges and inspire each other with their ingenuity," Newton said in a statement.

Consistent Network Device Naming coming to Fedora 15
The following is posted on behalf of Matt Domsch, a technology strategist (and Linux guru) in Dell's Office of the CTO
One of my long-standing pet projects – Consistent Network Device Naming, is finally coming to Fedora (emphasizing the 2 of the Fedora F’s: Features and First), and thereafter, all Linux distributions. What is this, you ask?
Systems running Linux have long had ethernet network devices named ethX. Your desktop likely has one ethernet port, named eth0. This works fine if you have only one network port, but what if, like on Dell PowerEdge servers, you have four ethernet ports? They are named eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3, corresponding to the labels on the back of the chassis, 1, 2, 3, 4, respectively. Sometimes. Aside from the obvious confusion of names starting at 0 verses starting at 1, other race conditions can happen such that each port may not get the same name on every boot, and they may get named in an arbitrary order. If you add in a network card to a PCI slot, it gets even worse, as the ports on the motherboard and the ports on the add-in card may have their names intermixed.
While several solutions have been proposed over time (detailed at Linux Plumbers Conference last year), none were deemed acceptable, until now.
Enter biosdevname, the tool Dell has developed to bring sanity (and consistency!) to network device names. Biosdevname is a udev helper, which renames network interfaces based on information presented by system BIOS.
The new naming convention is as follows:
em[1-N] for on-board (embedded) NICs (# matches chassis labels)
pci<slot>#<port> for cards in PCI slots, port 1..N
NPAR & SR-IOV devices add a suffix of _<vf>, from 0..N depending on the number of Partitions or Virtual Functions exposed on each port.
Other Linux conventions, such as .<vlan> and :<alias> suffixes remain unchanged and are still applicable.
This provides a sane mapping of Linux network interface name to externally visible network port (RJ-45 jack).
Where do we get this information? The algorithm is fairly simple:
If system BIOS exposes the new PCI Firmware Specification 3.1 ACPI _DSM method, we get the interface label and index from ACPI, and use those.
Else if system BIOS exposes an index and label in SMBIOS 2.6 types 9 and 41, use the index value.
Else if system BIOS exposes index via the HP proprietary SMBIOS extension, use that.
Else fall back to using the legacy PCI IRQ Routing Table to figure out which slots devices are in, sort the PCI device list in breadth-first order, and assign index values.
How will this affect you?
If you have scripts that have hard-coded eth0 or have assumptions that ethX is a particular port, your scripts are already broken (you may just not know it yet). Begin planning on using the new interface names going forward, adjusting your scripts as necessary.
Fedora 15 will be the first distribution to use biosdevname by default. There will be a Test Day on Thursday, January 27. I encourage you to download the Live image, boot it on your system, and verify that your network interfaces are now named according to the above convention, and that all works as expected. You may also take the opportunity to review your custom scripts, looking for hard-coded ethX values, and prepare for the coming name change.
Once we get sufficient exposure and verification using Fedora, I expect to see this change roll into other Linux distributions, and other operating systems, over time. Consider yourself warned.

Moscow Briton 'was due to marry'
Gordon Cousland worked as an analyst for CACI Related stories The British victim of the Moscow bomb attack was due to get married at the end of April and had a six-month-old daughter, it has emerged. Gordon Cousland's brother Robin told the BBC his family was "devastated" at the news of his death. Mr Cousland was among 35 people killed in a suspected suicide bomb attack at Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday. A Russian management consultant based in London, Kirill Bodrashov, is also believed to have been killed. The blast hit the airport's busy international arrivals hall at about 1630 local time (1330 GMT). More than 100 people were injured. Two flights from London Heathrow had arrived just before the explosion, but earlier reports by Russian authorities of a second British victim have been ruled out by the Foreign Office. Mr Cousland, who worked as a property analyst for marketing, property and IT firm CACI, was caught up in the attack as he arrived in Moscow for a business trip. Kirill Bodrashov was on a business trip when the attack took place His brother told the BBC: "We're all just completely shocked. It's devastated the family. "He recently got engaged. He had a young six-month-old baby and was due to be married at the end of April." Speaking at his home in Scredington, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, Mr Cousland said his brother travelled a lot for work and was "very successful" in his chosen profession. "He was a get-up-and-go man, nothing phased him," he said. "The job he was in took him around the world. Normally he would phone up to say he had got there safely, but he didn't phone." In a statement his colleagues in the London office of CACI said they were "deeply saddened" at the loss of "a respected colleague and friend". "Gordon, who worked at CACI for three-and-a-half years, was instrumental in setting up our European business and was well-known in the property industry," they said. "He had tremendous energy and enthusiasm for his clients' projects and will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and associates alike." Mr Bodrashov was with partner Elvira Muratova, 40, on a business trip for executive search firm New Millennium Group when the attack took place. They had a young son and lived in Queen's Gate, Kensington. Many in Russia suspect militants from the North Caucasus of the bombing, and unnamed officials said three suspects were being sought over the attack. Danny Glover Reacts To News Of 'Lethal Weapon' Reboot
'I like what we've done before in the past,' actor tells MTV News at Sundance.By Aly Semigran

It's been nearly 13 years since the fourth and seemingly final "Lethal Weapon" movie was released in theaters. But it was recently reported by Deadline.com that Warner Bros., along with producer Joel Silver, has sought out writer Will Beall to make a reboot of the action/ comedy franchise with an entirely new cast.
While in the past there had been talks of a possible "Lethal Weapon 5,"
featuring the original cast and reportedly to be penned by Shane Black, conflicting schedules as well as Mel Gibson's shattered public image had shelved it for the time being.
MTV News caught up with one of the series' stars, Danny Glover, at the
2011 Sundance Film Festival on Friday to discuss the news of a remake. The 64-year-old actor, who said he hadn't heard anything about it yet, channeled his character, Roger Murtaugh, as he said with a laugh, "I'm too old for this!"
Glover, who was attending Sundance to screen his latest film, "Black Power Mixtape," went on to talk about Mel Gibson, his onscreen partner in crime (fighting) from the original blockbusters. "I thought it was, for me and Mel, a wonderful journey," he said of his troubled co-star, adding, "I love Mel. Mel's my friend."
As for a potential reboot, Glover said, "I'd like to think that the four we did were still magical and people will still reference the four 'Lethal Weapon' [films]," adding, "I like what we've done before in the past."
Glover also seemed skeptical about a reboot without director Richard Donner, who directed all four films, at the helm. "Dick Donner is the one who's behind all this. Dick Donner is the one. He's really the magic behind this [franchise]," Glover said. "There's no way this could have been done, the four 'Lethal Weapon' movies, without Richard Donner."
Glover continued to praise his former director, saying Donner allowed him and his co-stars "the space for us to ... create the kind of relationships, touch the human relationships that we did in that movie."

Device Cancels the Sound and the Feary
[Sound of dentist drill.] That’s a sound that inspires fear around the world: the dentists’ drill. And fear of that sound itself could play a part in keeping some people from getting their regularly-scheduled check-up. Now, a solution to this “sound effect” may be in sight. Because researchers in London have developed technology to cancel out the drill’s unpleasant high-pitched whine.Noise cancelling headphones usually do away with low pitches. So the scientists designed a variation that a dentist could keep on hand. The device fits between any MP3 player or mobile phone and the patient’s own headphones. The patients could still hear the dentist or listen to their own music. But the microphone and chip in the device sample the incoming sound and produce an inverted wave that cancels out just the sound of the drill. As the drill’s frequency changes, the waveform quickly adapts to maintain the silence. [More]

At that point it will not respond to the mouse. I put the pointer on "Play Movie" but nothing happens. I ran the updates. It could be the disk but since it works fine to that point I doubt it is defective. The system plays DVD's with no problem. Any suggestions.?

Yeezy also divulged that the visual to his colossal Fantasy posse cut, "All of the Lights," would be available soon, tweeting, "ALL THE LIGHTS VIDEO IN 1 WEEK!!!!!!" The Chicago rapper/producer also hinted that the vibe of his forthcoming tracks may have a classical touch, saying, "THIS IS HIGH END RAP MUSIC. I just threw some bassoon on this muthaf---a."
Jay-Z dished to MTV News in November that the duo's collaborative work will showcase 'Ye's finely tuned production skills.
"This is another level of that recording," Hov explained. "Because Kanye, I've seen him — really he's like a brother to me — I've seen him from the beginning to where he is now. And to see him as a producer and to see how he's growing as a producer and as an artist, for me, on another level, it's enjoyable. I'm watching the guy that I pretty much mentored become his own guy, with his own opinion. It's fantastic."
Frequent 'Ye and Jay collaborator Swizz Beatz has echoed Hov's "another level" description, telling MTV News earlier this month that judging from the Throne sessions he's participated in, the rap titans — who have already dropped the Lex Luger-produced single "H.A.M." — are "going to continue pushing the envelope."
"People don't understand that hip-hop got started from being rebellious to any rules," Swizz said. "Hip-hop has no rules, and the only reason hip-hop started getting rules [was] because of radio airplay, sales, different spins and trying to reach out to another audience. But Jay and Kanye got the audience already so they can do what they want to do, and I think that's what they doing, which is a great move."

'No Strings Attached' Snags Weekend Box-Office Crown
Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher's 'sex friends' romp debuts with $20.3 million.By Mawuse Ziegbe

"No Strings Attached" proves that hooking up with friends can be successful — at the box office, at least.
Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher's romantic comedy about two pals that decide to take their relationship to the bedroom scored the top spot at the box office over the weekend, raking in $20.3 million. Kutcher told MTV News recently that despite their theater-packing performances, becoming "sex friends" with Portman onscreen was not the most comfortable experience.
"There weren't really any bloopers," he said. "It's always sort of awkward and giggly, right? Because you're there and you're with someone you sort of know, and there's a lot of people watching," he explained of the awkward factor involved in filming love scenes. "It's always kind of in-between scenes you try to make jokes and divert it, 'Oh it's not a big deal,' try to make it seem like it's not a big deal."
In second place is Seth Rogen's turn as the classic masked vigilante in the "The Green Hornet." The onscreen take on the beloved crime-fighter's adventures picked up $18.1 million over the weekend. The figure adds to the flick's total box-office bank of over $63 million.
"The Dilemma" finished the weekend in third place. The relationship comedy, which stars Kevin James a clueless husband and Vince Vaughn his buddy and business partner who struggles with whether to let him know his wife is cheating on him, scored $9.7 million. The figure kicks the film's total estimated tally to over $33 million.
Just behind "The Dilemma" is "The King's Speech." The Colin Firth vehicle, which is inspired by the wartime reign of British monarch King George VI, made $9.1 million. The film has picked up over $58 million since landing in theaters late last year.
In fifth place is the star-studded Western "True Grit." Featuring performances from Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and acclaimed newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, the movie made $8 million over the weekend. The film's total estimated haul now stands at around $138 million.

Jim Sturgess Picks Up Survival Tips Filming 'The Way Back'
'We skinned rabbits, we did all kinds of crazy stuff like that,' he tells MTV News.By Kara Warner
Jim Sturgess
Photo: MTV News
When a film shoots "on location," there is an added air of glitz and glamour. Thoughts of far-off exotic countries and stars getting pampered in fancy trailers come to mind.
That was not the case on the set of "The Way Back," however. Because the film is based on the real-life story of a group of inmates who escape the Siberian Gulag during World War II and must walk more than 4,000 miles to freedom, the actors were put through similar trials and tribulations (or as close as they could get to the real suffering, without endangering themselves) during production.
When MTV News caught up with Jim Sturgess ("21," "Across the Universe"), we asked him if he and his castmates (including Colin Farrell and Ed Harris) managed to pick up any survival tips throughout the process.
"Don't eat yellow snow," he joked. "No, there were loads. We were really lucky. We were able to be put in touch with a guy who had actually done the walk for real. A French expeditionist, a guy called Cyril Delafosse-Guiramand. He was an amazing guy. He basically read the book [on which the film is loosely based] 'The Long Walk,' and after reading that book decided he was going to take the trek from Siberia to India himself. He had his own food — he didn't just survive off the land — but he was just an amazing man to have around."
Before they started filming, Sturgess said the cast got together and learned a few basic survival skills, none of which he mastered.
"It was just building fires and how to find dry moss in snowy conditions and the best way to construct a fire, where to do it," Sturgess recalled. "We skinned rabbits, we did all kinds of crazy stuff like that, we felled trees, and he was teaching me lots of navigational techniques, how to navigate yourself north and south using shadows from sticks, from the sun rising. It was cool. We all enjoyed it."

FCC Ends Net Neutrality Debate (for Now) by Passing Its Open Internet Order
Members of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) agreed on one thing at Tuesday's meeting: the Internet does not need to be fixed. Despite this shared sentiment, the FCC's commissioners are divided on whether the government should act in anticipation of potential problems as the Internet matures. The panel voted 3–2 in favor of the Open Internet Order, designed to ensure what has commonly been referred to as " net neutrality ". [More]

'American Idol' Experts Talk Steven Tyler, Early Faves
'Idol' watchers praise New Orleans standouts and a Simon-less panel that seems to 'having a blast.'By Gil Kaufman

Despite less-than-stellar initial ratings, "American Idol" is coming out of the blocks for its 10th season with something even more important than audience share, particularly for a reality show hitting late middle age, and that's buzz.
With a format that is well-beyond familiar by now, the injection of fresh blood via new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez has amped up the watercooler talk for a show that some had predicted was on the decline. Despite fears that the show would stumble without the harsh guiding hand of departed go-to judge Simon Cowell, MTV News' , said instead of mourning the loss of King Cowell, he's praising the rise of Tyler.
"If anything, Steven Tyler's wacky addition proved that it's not a 'mean judge' that keeps me jazzed for 'Idol.' It's an unhinged one," said Cantiello about the entertaining, unpredictable shenanigans pulled out by Tyler in the first two nights of audition episodes this week. "Truth be told, I never realized how much I missed Paula [Abdul] last year. Tyler's colorful language, zany metaphors and deafening jangly man-jewelry was just the entertaining wild card the two-night premiere needed to give it a must-see facelift."
Cantiello was glad that the new trio, which also includes sole returning judge Randy Jackson, didn't fall into the same old "mean Simon" and "too-nice Paula" tropes. Lopez easily mixed Abdul's sweetness with an undercurrent of Cowell's honesty, while Tyler deftly pinwheeled between wacky Paula-isms amid stinging putdowns. And already he's delivered one of the season's top lines in his zinger to belcher Michael Perotto courtesy of "Tommy Boy": "Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child?"
MJ Santilli, founder of one of the leading "Idol" blogs, MJsBigBlog.com, agreed with Cantiello, calling Tyler the "breakout" star on the show so far. "The new panel seems to be having a blast," she said. "Fun has been sorely missing from the judges' table the past couple of years. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez's enthusiasm has energized Randy Jackson. The fresh, new panel has me not missing Simon Cowell at all. Yet."
The real test, though, will be when the show goes live on March 1, which will provide proof of whether the apparent camaraderie among the three is real or the product of clever editing.
But what about, you know, the singers, who are ostensibly the focus of the show? Santilli said the New Jersey singers on Wednesday night were mostly weak, but maybe that was because they held back the best stuff in order to let the new panelists shine and get some traction. "The New Orleans hopefuls had more standouts," she said of Thursday night's bunch. "At least, there are a couple that I remember, like the two teen tenors, Brett Loewenstern and Jacee Badeaux."
With the age limit dropped to 15 this year, Santilli suspects the producers are gunning for a teen winner in season 10, but with high schoolers having struggled in the live shows last year, it's unclear if the young'uns can handle the pressure of performing in front of an audience.
With less jokey singers and a higher talent ratio on Thursday night, Cantiello also thought New Orleans offered up some promising contestants we might see again in Hollywood. "I can't say I'm looking forward to another three weeks of audition episodes, though," he added. "Let's get to the live shows already!"

MTV's New Awards Show Will Honor Digital Music, Media
'Expect to see something that you wouldn't typically see,' MTV rep says.By James Montgomery
Photo: MTV
When it comes to awards shows, MTV has spent the past three decades breaking the mold. Come spring, they'll try to invent a new mold altogether.
On Wednesday, the network revealed it is planning an entirely new awards show, one aimed at honoring digital music and media. And unlike the long-running Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — which lampoon traditionally stodgy fetes like the Grammys and the Oscars — this time out, there's no pre-existing blueprint to go up against. This will be an entirely new undertaking.
"I think the idea we're trying to convey is: We have the current heavyweight champions of music and movie awards shows, and we love them — they're a great place for celebrating music and movies — but we also think something new is going on," Dermot McCormack, head of digital for MTV Music and Logo Group, told MTV News on Thursday (January 20). "The industry has evolved into a digital medium, and fans have evolved right along with it. So we figured it was time to re-examine how we reward achievement in these new mediums."
McCormack said the still-untitled show will premiere in the spring, and will air live on the Internet, on social media sites and mobile devices — but will not be broadcast.
"This is a tent pole born from the digital medium, so the rules of television don't really apply here," he said. "We're a multi-screen company, and everything we do should take advantage of all our screens. This show may air, but it definitely will not be something live from 8 to 10 p.m. on MTV. One of the great opportunities with digital is that we remove constraints. And when we do, we think great creativity will show up."
And while the awards categories are still being determined, McCormack said fans can expect to see their favorite music apps and blogs honored in a way that's befitting of MTV's awards-show legacy.
"Expect to see something that you wouldn't typically see," he said. "The idea here is to create a response to this great renaissance that's happening, the activity and revolution in the music business. It's not only about where music is today, but where it's going too. We want to stake a claim in that while still dipping into our heritage. When the first VMAs happened [in 1984], you had Dan Aykroyd coming out smoking a cigarette. That's the same spirit we'd like to capture here."

'Breaking Dawn' Star Peter Facinelli Says Shooting Final Scene Was 'Sad'
'It got a little melancholy,' the actor said of the recently filmed last scene of 'The Twilight Saga' finale.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Production on the two parts of "Breaking Dawn" is expected to stretch well into April, with the cast eventually departing Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to finish up shooting on the final "Twilight Saga" films in Vancouver, Canada. But whereas the makers of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" chose to save that franchise's final scene until the very end of production, the "Breaking Dawn" cast has already shot the last scene of their finale film — and it apparently was a pretty gloomy experience.
"The other day when we shot that ending sequence, we knew that was the ending of the last two movies and it got a little melancholy," Peter Facinelli, who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen, told us on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday. "It was sad."
While the 37-year-old actor wouldn't delve into detail about the scene — "Lots of vampires," he teased — Robert Pattinson, also walking the Globes carpet, dished about the lengthy climax toward the end of "Breaking Dawn, Part 2." "There's like a 27-minute sequence in the final sequence, and it takes forever to shoot," he revealed. "There's about 75 people in it. Being on a piece of fake snow surrounded by green screen for like a month, it's driving me absolutely insane."
Facinelli, too, admitted that filming the final fight has meant the cast must suffer through a "brutal" production schedule, but he credited director Bill Condon with creating a calm, creative working environment.
"Bill Condon's fantastic," he said. "He's such a great actors'
director. He's really collaborative. He's a joy to work with. He's very relaxed all the time. You never see him sweat."

Production on the two parts of "Breaking Dawn" is expected to stretch well into April, with the cast eventually departing Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to finish up shooting on the final "Twilight Saga" films in Vancouver, Canada. Of parts and partners (2 of 2)
Earlier, I wrote about the Dell OEM Partner Program, a pilot initiative that Dell OEM Solutions has recently kicked off in an effort to leverage that channel partner community to increase the capabilities available to OEM customers. Dell’s broad portfolio of desktops, workstations, servers, storage and services plus the stocking, international logistics, advanced financing and detailed customization capabilities brought by channel partners make for a powerful combination that can help any company focus the balance of product development spending on innovating around areas that will help them differentiate themselves in the industry.
But what about the other end of the partner spectrum? How can a company leverage bits, bytes and pieces from Intel, AMD, Microsoft, Red Hat, Fujitsu-Siemens, Seagate, Samsung, and all of the other makers of processors, software, hard drives, memory, NICs and other technology out there?
That is another area where Dell OEM Solutions is able to help. As opposed to engaging these technology companies individually, over 1300 companies look to Dell in an effort to make engagement with these companies and their products seamless. Why deal with a myriad of different product refreshes, changing roadmaps, product rebates, technology interactions, contracts and supply chains when you can engage with Dell and leverage our engagements with those companies, knowledge of their products and engineering resources directed at getting them all to work together in commercially available desktops, workstations, servers and storage products.
And we don’t just leverage standard products and processes from these vendors. We have spent over 13 years working with OEM customers and working to improve our product and service offering to them, based upon the capabilities brought to market by industry leading technology companies. In fact, we have recently joined into a relationship with a large technology company that has historically been used by other component companies or other technology integrators. While we cannot yet name this company, its technology is inside most of the Dell products that ship out of our factories. And by joining this alliance, Dell is looking to change the game by enabling the companies to work together to better meet the needs of our joint customers. In addition, we’re working together to jointly promote the message that it isn’t necessary for a company to start from scratch, create their own proprietary ASICs, bend sheet metal, code software, build new supply chains and create services organizations from scratch in order to go to market with a new product.
Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more information on this partnership and how it will help companies better leverage the capabilities of two of the largest technology companies in the world in their own end-user available products.

Muslim prejudice 'seen as normal'
Baroness Warsi will say she raised the issue of Islamophobia with Pope Benedict XVI Related stories Prejudice against Muslims has "passed the dinner-table test" and become socially acceptable in the UK, a senior Conservative is to say. Sayeeda Warsi, co-chairman of the Tory Party, will warn against dividing Muslims into moderates and extremists. The baroness, the first Muslim woman to serve in the cabinet, will say such labels fuel misunderstanding. She will use a speech at Leicester University to accuse the media of superficial discussion of Islam. Baroness Warsi will say anti-Muslim prejudice is now seen by many Britons as normal and uncontroversial, and she will use her position to fight an "ongoing battle against bigotry". In extracts of the speech, published in the Daily Telegraph, the peer blames "the patronising, superficial way faith is discussed in certain quarters, including the media", for making Britain a less tolerant place for believers. She is expected to reveal that she raised the issue of Islamophobia with Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Britain last year, urging him to "create a better understanding between Europe and its Muslim citizens".The BBC's religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott said Baroness Warsi is to say publicly what many Muslims privately complain about - that prejudice against them does not attract the social stigma attached to prejudice against other religious and ethnic groups. “It's not a big leap of imagination to predict where the talk of 'moderate' Muslims leads”Baroness Warsi "Lady Warsi has broached the issue before," our correspondent says. "She told the 2009 Conservative Party conference that anti-Muslim hatred had become Britain's last socially acceptable form of bigotry, and claimed in a magazine article last October that taking a pop at the Muslim community in the media sold papers and didn't really matter." In her speech, she is expected to say the description of Muslims as either moderate or extremist encourages false assumptions. "It's not a big leap of imagination to predict where the talk of 'moderate' Muslims leads; in the factory, where they've just hired a Muslim worker, the boss says to his employees: 'Not to worry, he's only fairly Muslim'," she will say. "In the school, the kids say: 'The family next door are Muslim but they're not too bad'. "And in the road, as a woman walks past wearing a burka, the passers-by think: 'That woman's either oppressed or is making a political statement'." Baroness Warsi will say terror offences committed by a small number of Muslims should not be used to condemn all who follow Islam. But she will also urge Muslim communities to be clearer about their rejection of those who resort to violent acts. "Those who commit criminal acts of terrorism in our country need to be dealt with not just by the full force of the law," she will say. "They also should face social rejection and alienation across society and their acts must not be used as an opportunity to tar all Muslims."This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Call for pre-school intervention
Mr Allen's report says work needs to be done to improve every child's "school readiness" Related stories Early intervention will improve the lives of vulnerable children and help break the cycle of "dysfunction and under-achievement", a report says. The government-commissioned report recommends regular assessments of all pre-school children, focusing on their social and emotional development. Graham Allen's report also calls for a national parenting programme in the UK. The Labour MP was asked to assess how children from disadvantaged backgrounds could be given the best start in life. His report says success or failure in early childhood has "profound economic consequences" and calls for more private money to be channelled into early intervention schemes to help set children on the right path in life. It also recommends numbering all year groups from birth not just from the start of primary school. In his report, the Nottingham North MP says decades of late intervention has failed and major social problems have got worse not better. All too often society is failing to equip young children with the social and emotional skills they need in life, he says."If we continue to fail, we will only perpetuate the cycle of wasted potential, low achievement, drink and drug misuse, unintended teenage pregnancy, low work aspirations, anti-social behaviour and lifetimes on benefits, which now typifies millions of lives and is repeated through succeeding generations," the report warns. “Socially and emotionally capable people are more productive, better educated, tax-paying citizens helping our nation to compete in the global economy, and make fewer demands on public expenditure”Graham Allen MP and report author Only early intervention can break the "inter-generational cycle of dysfunction and under-achievement", it says. Mr Allen's report highlights the impact of poor parenting and says too few parents-to-be understand how to build the social and emotional capability of a baby or small child. All parents need to know how to "recognise and respond to a baby's cues, attune with infants and stimulate them from the very start, and how to foster empathy", it says. The report quotes some American research that shows the early years are the greatest period of growth in the human brain. This is why, Mr Allen argues, it is important to intervene in the early years, rather than later when the basic architecture, or wiring, of the brain is formed for life. He highlights the Family Nurse Partnership, which has had a lot of success in the United States, and says it should be available to all vulnerable first-time mothers in the UK. The programme sees specially trained nurses regularly visiting young, first-time mothers from pregnancy until their child is two, to promote attachment and positive parenting. Mr Allen also suggests the UK gives the pre-school years - 0 to 5, including pregnancy - the same recognition developmentally as the primary and secondary years of education. He says this could be partly achieved by numbering all the year groups from birth, not just from the start of primary school which starts with the Reception year. The prime objective of this should be "to produce high levels of 'school readiness' for all children, regardless of income," he says. "It is important that everyone with responsibilities for child development, particularly parents, understands how the 0 to 18 health and educational cycle is continuous from birth and does not start on entry to primary school."He also calls for regular assessment of pre-school-age children, focusing on social and emotional development "so that they can be put on the path to 'school readiness'". He adds: "Socially and emotionally capable people are more productive, better educated, tax-paying citizens helping our nation to compete in the global economy, and make fewer demands on public expenditure." He recommends setting up an independent early intervention foundation to drive early intervention forward, assess policies and attract investment. "I recommend that the foundation should be led and funded by non-central government sources, including local authorities, ethical and philanthropic trusts, foundations and charities, as well as private investors who have already expressed an interest in this." Mr Allen is due to publish a second report before the summer parliamentary recess detailing how private sector money can fund proven early intervention programmes.
[More]

[More]

Nine on trial for Athens bombings
Police ringed the court at Korydallos high security prison in Athens Related stories Nine suspected members of an anarchist group have gone on trial in Greece for a series of bomb attacks in Athens. A total of 13 suspects, aged 19 to 30, are accused of "belonging to a terrorist organisation". Four are being tried in absentia. Last November, the "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei" said it had sent parcel bombs to foreign embassies in Athens as well as three foreign leaders abroad. If found guilty, the suspects could go to prison for between 10 and 25 years. Monday's trial was taking place before three judges at the Korydallos high security jail in Athens, the setting for earlier trials involving the left-wing extremist groups November 17 and Revolutionary Popular Struggle (ELA). Police ringed the court building as the session began. It was suspended briefly when one of the nine defendants complained that his relatives and friends were being prevented from entering the court. In November, more than a dozen devices were sent to addresses in Greece and across Europe, prompting the Greek authorities to halt deliveries of overseas mail. The following month, the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei said it was behind an explosion outside a court in Athens and last week five people, including a German woman, were arrested on suspicion of planning further attacks before Monday's trial began. This article is from the BBC News website. British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
